Starting a coin collection specially for your children can be fun and rewarding. More than that, it can be educational as well. A coin collection for the sake of your children can increase the possibility of spending quality time with them too. It is quite a thrill to collect old coins and show your kids how the mode of currency has changed over the years. Or you could collect coins from around the world and using an atlas explain where they are used. Hey, you may learn something yourself.

Finding the coins

The obvious of course is coin shops but this where you'll probably pay most. In the USA you should try garage sales, Graigslist, flea markets, antique fairs and eBay for starters.

In the United Kingdom visit boot sales, antique fairs, charity shops, second-hand dealers, Exchange & Mart, Loot and eBay.

I am sure there are many more places you can find coins and your imagination could turn up a niche supply with more coins than you can handle.

Motivating your youngsters

Encouraging your child to see coin collecting as a hobby is not necessarily easy, but still possible. Try to motivate them to like coin collecting by helping them realize the importance and benefit they can get from it. Kids love the idea of treasure trove.

Start with coins with a story then show them to your child. Sit down with him and tell them the stories about the coins. This will build their interest them. There is lots of useful information on the Internet.

Keep Your Collection Safe

If your children are actively collecting coins, Make sure your children keep their collections in a safe place where visitors or strangers will not see them. Don't forget the collections your children build may become valuable so help them to store them safely.

Nice article. My husband is a coin dealer and he really encourages young kids to take up the hobby.

Ask your grandparents, aunts and uncles about old coins they might have. They may have an old one or two and a wonderful story to share about them.
