A few ideas for cutting costs for the holidays while filling that list.

Going Green for the Holidays

In today's hurry scurry world finding time to shop for the holidays is often a difficult task. By the time a person has the time to shop the stores are closed. For those who live in snow regions getting out in the cold and snow is often a daunting task; especially if no car is available. But in the internet age shopping can be much easier and better for the environment in the process.

With online shopping for gifts you have the option of having the items sent to your own home or you can have the items delivered directly to the person it was meant for by the company. Since shipping charges are sometimes waived with orders over a certain amount you can save, time money, and a hassle by having the items delivered by the company.

For online shoppers there is a broader choice of stores than at the local mall, especially in the smaller cities and rural areas. Besides the online merchants like overstock, amazon, and nearly all of the major department stores have websites with online ordering. For shoppers who do not wish to use their credit card in several places there are several online payment services like paypal which offer a secure method for online payment. With online shopping there is no need to worry about filling the gas tank, getting dressed, especially in winter, or worrying about what time the store is open. Whether it be 2am or 2pm the internet stores are always open.

By buying gifts online and having the merchant deliver them or by purchasing gift cards you also save on wrapping paper and all the accessories needed. This saves you more money and helps the environment by not having all that extra paper.

For people who have family members scattered all over the country or even overseas the gift card is an excellent way to help save time and money. Teens can often be the most difficult people to buy a gift for and with a gift card there is no worry about burning time and fuel to make several trips to a store for the right item or having to stand in endless return lines after the holiday is over. The gift card can also save extra money in other ways like being able to buy an item after the holiday is over when things go on sale.

For the do it yourself type of gift giver recycling old household items in to artists creations is an excellent way to save money and give someone a one of a kind gift. For people who want to learn something new, craft classes are excellent ways to create that special something. Mothers and Grandmothers always love getting hand made gifts from family members.

Gift giving does not need to be a stressful and expensive venture; with a little effort you can save yourself some time and money while helping out the environment.

Sherrill, excellent article on going green for the holidays. I only go to the mall once a year during the holidays and I'm thinking that your way is better and I should cut out my one visit a year. Items are more expensive at the malls. Some of our malls have closed and we only have a few left. I've always liked to shop online. I look around for the best deals and just like you said if I spend a certain amount I get free shipping.

The only mall here is an outlet mall. I can't remember the last time I went to a mall.

I used to think the malls were so nice but I see it so different now. The added expense because of their upkeep is just not feasible in this world that we live in.

There isn't anything I can gift my friends and family that they don't already have or I can't afford. For example, my son wants an airplane; my husband a Ferrari; my sister her health back...all leaving me in a quandary about holiday shopping by any method.

All this said, I loved reading your article!

My Dad has all that he wants, but I still find a way to give him something . He loves coffee so I buy him coffee from Tim Horton's, something he can't get in California and his state has outlawed plastic shopping bags so I bought a few and painted them myself.

Like my Granma used to say, it it's not what you, but that you do.
