The old Wembley stadium had some great soccer matches. As a venue for the England national soccer team, a number of the best games played at the stadium were England games. Here are a few of England's finest games played at the stadium.

Great England Soccer Matches at Wembley

It was at the '66 World Cup where some of England's best games were played. Most notably, the semi-final and final of the World Cup where England played Portugal and then Germany. In the semi-finals, England played a very good Portugal team, but thanks to goals from Charlton were able to run out 2-1 winners to reach their first World Cup final.

The World Cup final at Wembley, was a great game with the right result for England. The game had plenty of goals, and great excitement. A late German equalizer was enough to prevent England winning the World Cup in 90 minutes, with the score at 2-2. As such, extra-time was required and here England would score two further goals, with a Hurst hat-trick, to seal the game 4-2. As such, with this they won the FIFA World Cup.

The best England games at Wembley since, have largely involved World Cup and European qualifying games. In such games, England have played with home advantage at Wembley stadium. Some notable wins include England's 8-0 thrashing of Turkey at Wembley in the 1987 European Championship, which was one of England's biggest wins at the stadium in recent times. In 1981, England played against Hungary in a World Cup qualifier for a place in the '82 World Cup finals. With a 1-0 at Wembley, they qualified for the '82 World Cup which was their first since 1970.

For the European Championship in '96, Wembley also hosted England games. Here, England gained a 2-0 win over Scotland in an important group game. Against Holland, they played a good deal better, with a fine 4-1 win to progress.

The semi-final against Germany was England's last game at the European Championship. Despite taking the lead, a German equalizer would leave the game level at 1- 1. Neither team could break the dead-lock, and so penalties decided the game. Here, Germany won the shoot-out to progress to the final.

These are just a few of the great England matches played at Wembley. From the great World Cup games against Portugal and Germany, as well as superb qualifying games such as the 8-0 win against Turkey, and then great wins over the likes of Scotland and Holland at Wembley in the European Championship.
