The record number of goals scored for England is 49. Charlton scored this record, although was not strictly a striker. A number of great England strikers have fallen short of this scoring record. These were some of England's best strikers.

James Greaves

Greaves played 57 games for England, and scored 44 goals. In terms of goals per a game, this is one of the best averages and certainly eclipses Charlton in this respect. As such, Greaves was one of England's best strikers of the '66 era, although missed out on the World Cup final. At club level, Greaves was also a prolific striker for both Chelsea and Spurs in the '60s.

Gary Lineker

Linekar is the striker to have been closest to Charlton's record. With 48 goals scored, he scored more goals than any other striker for England. Lineker was especially potent in the '86 World Cup, where he scored six goals in total and was the top goal scoring player. In the 1990 World Cup, Linekar was also on target for England against Germany in the semi-finals, scoring the equalizing goal.

In more recent times, Owen has been England's most prolific striker. With 40 goals scored overall, Owen has starred for England in World Cups such as the '98 World Cup where he scored one of the best goals against Argentina in the 2nd round. Owen also scored a hat-trick in Munich against Germany, a game that England won 5-1 overall. Overall, a very quick striker and a great dribbler.

“And here come Hurst,” started BBC commentator in the '66 World Cup final. Then it was continued: “They think it's all over. It is now!” With that Hurst scored his third goal in the '66 final to win the World Cup for England. Overall, it was a rare World Cup hat-trick scored by the England striker. While something of an understundy for Greaves, Hurst's form in the World Cup saw him play the final. In addition to this, Hurst also played in the 1970 World Cup, where he scored against Romania. With 24 goals scored for England, Hurst undoubtedly was a great England striker.

Shearer netted 30 goals for England. These included five goals in the European Championship. In addition to this, goals at the World Cup added to an impressive tally. At club level, Shearer holds the Premiership scoring record, with 260 goals scored in total with clubs such as Blackburn and Newcastle.

So, these are a few great England strikers. Players such as Hurst, Greaves, Linekar, Shearer and Owen have scored over one hundred goals between them for England. While the likes of Hurst and Greaves won the World Cup also. For club and country, they were great players.
