How many times have England won the World Cup? Only once, but this does not mean that England have had only one great manager. A few England managers have almost added further trophies.

Great England Soccer Team Managers

The first England manager was Walter Winterbottom who was manager for 139 games, which is a record. In addition, Winterbottom's England teams won 78 games, which is a record number. Overall, England qualified for their first World Cups and reached the quarter-finals twice of the '54 and '62 World Cups. In the '62 World Cup England lost to the eventual winners Brazil. England was also comfortably the best British team. It should be noted that Winterbottom was not able to select the entire England squad, with the FA selection committee selecting players. Overall, Winterbottom laid better foundations for his successor Ramsey and England to win the FIFA World Cup by introducing better approaches to coaching.

Therefore, it was Sir Alf Ramsey who would assume the management of team affairs. With some very good players, Ramsey selected a great team, which would win the 1966 World Cup without losing a game. Further to this, England also reached the quarter-finals of the 1970 World Cup but lost 3-2 to West Germany. Overall, England won most of their games with Ramsey, with 69 wins.

England was somewhat inconsistent with Robson, but lost only one qualifying game from 28 that were played for four championships. However, in the World Cup they were quite good, and reached the quarter-finals in '86 and semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup. Overall, this was one of England's best World Cups. Admittedly, they did not do so well in the European Championships, but had some great results such as an 8-0 roasting of Turkey in qualifying.

The first foreign England manager was not able to win a further championship. However, three quarter-finals were reached and there were some very good results. Overall, England won most of their games and lost only five competitive games, and generally was more consistent than previously. Overall, they climbed up to 4th place in the FIFA world rankings. However, two penalty shoot-outs against Portugal were enough to halt England from further progressing and potentially winning a championship.

So overall, these were four great England team managers. While only once has England won the World Cup with Alf Ramsey, others such Walter Winterbottom, Robson and Sven were not too far away.
