Microsoft Studios has a number of big game series not only for Windows, but the Xbox consoles. The software giant has a variety of studios in the United States and Europe that have produced some great game titles. These are a few of their most notable franchises.

Age of Empires

Age of Empires (AoE) game series has plenty of fans and been one of the most innovative Microsoft Studio titles. The franchise includes a trilogy of titles: Age of Empires, Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings and Age of Empires 3. These make up the main series, but there are also expansion packs that have expanded the series. The franchise has largely been for Windows.

The AoE titles are essentially RTS games set in various historical periods. In this game series resources such as gold, wood and stone are collected by villagers to construct larger settlements with barracks, stables and archery ranges to build up armies for campaigns or multiplayer skirmishes. There are a variety of campaigns included in the AoE series based in Europe, North America and Asia.

The most recent addition to the franchise is The Asian Dynasties. However, there is also Age of Empires Online which is a more recent AoE multiplayer game. This was the first AoE in which Ensemble Studios was not involved.

To coincide with the launch of the Xbox, Microsoft Studios needed its own exclusive game for the console. That was Halo, a sci-fiction FPS set in 2552 that stars the super trooper Master Chief. In this franchise the United Nations Space Command, otherwise UNSC, is at war with the Covenant aliens. In the original title the Master Chief and other UNSC troops abandon the Pillar of Autumn and land on a mysterious Halo soon after the Covenant discovers their space station.

The original Halo was the first of the trilogy that starred the Master Chief. Halo 2 and Halo 3 wrapped up the trilogy, before further titles such as Halo Reach, which did not include the Master Chief, expanded the series. However, the Master Chief has now returned to the game in further additions to the series.

This franchise is, by some distance, the biggest on the Xbox. With its gripping story, soundtrack and exciting game play the game has a cult following with Halo comics and a book series. The series has set new records, and Halo 5 could be another great addition to the franchise.

Forza Motorsport

Forza Motorsport is one of the top racing games on the Xbox and Xbox 360. The first Forza Motorsport debuted on the Xbox in 2005, and since then there have been five more Forza Motorsport games on the Xbox consoles. The most recent addition is Forza Motorsport 6.

These games include a variety of super cars such as the Enzo Ferrari and the Audi R8. In addition, there are plenty of famed circuits included in the game series such as Silverstone, Road Atlanta and Laguna Seca. The series has a great physics engine and is one of the best Xbox racers.

Gears of War

The Gears of War series has been another notable shoot em on the Xbox consoles. Epic Studios designed the franchise that is owned by Microsoft Studios. In this series man is locked in a conflict with the Locus Horde. The franchise has had four additions to the series, and puts greater emphasis on a cover-based combat system. In addition to its gripping single player game, it also has several multiplayer modes for players to battle it out on. After Halo Gears of War has been one of the best Xbox shooters.

They are three of Microsoft Studio's great franchises. Halo, Gears of War, Age of Empires and Forza Motorsport are three of the big game series on Windows and Xbox consoles.
