Yes, Sweet Tee is 'the baby' of our family. Some would say he is spoiled, I say he is just loved a whole lot. Since he was a rescue dog, we did encounter some problems but, we tackled them with love and a lot of patience.

Sweet Tee

This is my Sweet Tee in all his glory. He has the prettiest coat, it looks like velvet and also feels like velvet. Sweet Tee is not one to make friends easily, he is what I call, gun shy when it comes to people. Maybe that is because, from the time he was a new born puppy and until he was rescued by Caitlyn, he was mistreated by humans.

Sweet Tee has gotten a lot better being around strangers but, he is still apprehensive and in the condition they found my baby, I can not blame him for how he feels. I too would be afraid of humans.

You see, our Sweet Tee was found by authorities in a home that was abandoned by the people that were suppose to care for him, in a cage with his brothers and sisters, left to die. Also, his mother was in a cage, sitting next to them. Just imagine how you would feel about those things that walk on two legs, doing this to you.

So yes, it takes a lot of trusting on Sweet Tee's part and it also, takes a lot of love and care from, the very same creatures that left him to die. I think we have accomplished that, plus more. Adding a pet to your life, that has not had the best start in life, not only enriches their life, it will enrich yours as well.

It is so hard to believe my baby Sweet Tee, will be one years old Thursday, how time flies when you're having fun and he sure is a lot of fun.

What the Heck!

We picked Sweet Tee up after speaking to Caitlyn about this dog, that had yet to be named, by us that is. I knew Sweet Tee was 'the one' from the start, I don't know why, I just got this feeling that we would be good for each other.

I have yet to be wrong with all the dogs I have picked out for our family.

Well we brought this little guy home and not only was he having to deal with 3 'new' creatures that walk on two legs but, he now has this 'big' dog that I can only imagine must have seemed to Sweet Tee, to be the biggest dog he has ever seen in his entire life and he was not sure about all of this.

Going UP!

Now that my kids have grown up and moved out on their own, I have had the pleasure of watching Bugg and Sweet Tee grow and I mean, literally grow in front of my eyes. Sweet Tee didn't have as many growth spurts as Bugg has but, he still has had a few noticeable ones.

I remember one day Bugg, Sweet Tee and I woke up from a nap and I noticed Sweet Tee was walking around as if he had booties on his feet, just a high stepping.

Then as I really focused in on him, I noticed that Sweet Tee had grown about two inches, in just two hours and his growth spurt was all in his legs. Sweet Tee was sure having a hard time figuring those long legs out.

It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. All three of us went outside so the boys could play. Sweet Tee walked around the yard for a few minutes and then, he started to get the hang of these long things, we call legs.

Must say No

Sometimes when we get a animal that has been through such a traumatic event as Sweet Tee has, we tend to baby them and allow them to get away with things. Just because we feel sorry for them and we want to make their world as bright as possible.

Do not do this, you should have no guilt, you did not do this to them, so push all that out the window and train your dog. When they do wrong let them know they are doing wrong, in a firm, yet non-aggressive tone.

When they do right, give them plenty of praise and a treat never hurts. This way, you can help them get over any insecurities that they have from being abandoned.

I know some experts say that dogs do not remember their past and they live in the here and now well, I say poppycock. Sure they remember, I have seen it first hand so many times, with more than one dog, might I add.

Just as trauma hits us, we can either hold onto the past or let it go. You have to help your dog let go of the past, help them let go of the bad feelings and replace them with a happy new beginning.

You must earn the dogs respect. Allowing your dog to misbehave will not earn that respect you and your dog are looking for.

Slow it Down

As Sweet Tee was getting older I continued to train Sweet Tee daily and also give Bugg refresher courses, from time to time.

Sweet Tee was starting to trust humans again, well at least us that is. Bugg was still the one Sweet Tee latched a hold of though and for the time being, I allowed it.

I knew I had to approach Sweet Tee in a different manner than I did with Bugg, I had to take it slow. By this time though, I was able to get Sweet Tee to 'sit', 'stay' and 'leave it' on command. Sweet Tee was coming right along.

Bugg has been the best teacher for Sweet Tee, in helping Sweet Tee gain some confidence. Bugg knows his place in the pack order and respects it, he is trained and though Bugg is Big and powerful, he is a gentle giant. Bugg will correct Sweet Tee but, he does it in a firm, yet gentle manner.

This was exactly what this little puppy that was abandoned needed. If a dog feels insecure, they will act out because they are in constant fear. Fear is one of the main reasons why a dog will show aggression towards another animal or people.

The love and yet security that Bugg has given Sweet Tee, has allowed Sweet Tee the time to get over his insecurities and he is a well contented dog in every way possible because of this union.

Stretch!

At first I was having a hard time keeping Sweet Tee's attention when it came to his training exercises but, then I figured out what the problem was.

Where as Bugg does better with his training exercises when he is fresh and not tired. Sweet Tee is just the opposite of Bugg, when it comes to the 'proper time' to do training exercising with him.

We have a more productive training session when Sweet Tee is allowed to release all of his pent up energy most puppies have.

This does not, nor has it ever worked with Bugg, when he gets tired, it is harder for him to focus on his exercises.

Remember: All dogs are different, what might work on one, will not work for another. It is up to you to provide a good, healthy, safe environment and choose the 'right' moment to train your dog.

Fetch!

This has to be Sweet Tee's favorite game, fetch. Unlike his brother Bugg, Sweet Tee will bring the stick back.

We usually play for thirty minutes at a time and do this at least 3 times a day. Then we go inside Bugg lays down, Sweet Tee and I do some training exercises.

After Sweet Tee's training exercises he will sleep for a good solid hour, a happy puppy is a well contented puppy and also, it makes for a happy home for the whole family.

No Bite!

I don't know exactly which breed of dogs Sweet Tee has in him but, the most prominent one has to be the pit bull.

I have found the pit bull to be a gentle dog, from the ones I have been around but, to have a 'soft mouth', nope that is not in their description.

Yet Bugg has taught Sweet Tee to have a 'soft mouth' and he will not tolerate Sweet Tee to even start to bite down. As the leader of the pack, neither will I. Sweet Tee has had to be reminded not to bite down but, he is just a puppy and puppies need to be reminded every now and then.

This photograph was taken while Bugg and Sweet Tee were doing there, 'walk around the yard, will not give up the frisbie to the other', kind of game. Sweet Tee decided to get a better hold of the frisbie and when he did, Sweet Tee caught part of Bugg's lower lip, twice.

The first time Bugg let it go but the second time, Bugg was mad and had taken Sweet Tee to the ground. No Sweet Tee was not hurt in the least bit but, he did learn a lesson...

Do not allow yourself to bite down hard on any animal and no, we will not take the excuse that it was an accident.

Also, I will not tolerate either dog putting their mouths on any person, period!

Gotcha Bugg!

Now yes, Bugg is much bigger and stronger than Sweet Tee but, do not get me wrong, as long as Sweet Tee is playing by the rules and does not bite down.

These two will wrestle for a hour and no, Bugg is not always the victor.

As I have watched these two over the last ten months or so, I have noticed Bugg allows Sweet Tee the upper edge at times, just because he loves Sweet Tee and also, he is training his baby.

B-Day To Me!

Yes (by our calculations) it will be Sweet Tee's birthday March 15, 2012 and yes, there will be a party.

Of course he will have a birthday surprise with (Dog) birthday cake and (Dog) ice cream and Bugg will join him in the festivities.

I have already picked out his present (shhhh) it is a new bed. Sweet Tee just loves sleeping on a doggie bed and his is a bit worn out.

I noticed Sweet Tee is shedding his winter coat so for a special treat, he will go for a spa day. He has only been once and he just loved it, so that will help make his day a bit more special.

Why do I take the extra time out for my dogs, it is because they have given so much to me, I owe them at least that much.

So...

Can you make March 15 the day you reach out and adopt a pet. Just make sure you get the 'right' pet that suits your family. Do your research on any animal you decide to add to your family.

I went against my usual type of dog this time around, as I have never had the pleasure of having a pit bull but, the next time I go looking to add another dog to our family, I will not pass up a pit bull, I find them to be very loving and an great addition to any family.

Sweet Tee's candle will be lit in two days, when he makes his wish and blows out his candle, can you make his wish come true...

Open your heart and your home to a pet that needs someone to love them.

We did and we are better for it.

Well, Denise, if this doesn't inspire someone to adopt a pet, I don't think anything could inspire them to adopt a pet.

Mark, they really are and as you know, it is not a easy job but, it is a fulfilling one. Yep Mark, it is Bugg that is a lot bigger than most think because, Sweet Tee is a good size medium dog. That is why I call Bugg my never ending dog, I swear the guy is still growing.LOL

We should be remembered by how we treat our fellow beings, other species that coexist with us, to add spice to our lives. We are all from the same source, and for some who believe as such, we can be born as other species too, who knows? I believe whatever we do, will be accounted for and leave indelible marks on our psyches and will be accumulated - both the positives and the negatives. Thanks for a heart warming story, Denise - siva

Thank you Siva for your kind words. I do believe what you put out here on earth does matter. I also believe if you put yourself in the place to be the care taker of a human being or a pet, you have the responsibility to care for them with all the love you have. Neither of these dogs have chosen to be with me, I chose them. I also believe we will be judged on all our negative and positive things we put out in the universe. Happy Birthday to Sweet Tee and regards to Bugg. We do enjoy your posts. You have a huge heart of gold and such a talent for the written word, along with great productions. I wish I could have captured Sarah (cat) having a staring contest with Rosie (goat) this morning, she has no fear and I suspect might be bi-polar like my sister. I wanted to ask about a past post regarding garlic and dogs because we have been using it for years to combat worms, fleas and ticks in their food. Let me know and thanks for yet another great effort.

Oh Robb, I bet that was a sight to behold with both Sarah and Rosie, too funny! Well Robb, I do not give my dogs garlic and never have. I was told along time ago from a veterinarian not to do so, as it can become toxic. When it comes to worms, fleas and ticks, I do get the chemicals, meaning, I use frontline for the fleas and ticks. For worms the dogs get a pill once a month. I wish I could find a natural cure but, I find taking care of this problem by chemicals far out weighs the diseases they can get from ticks and even flatworms. This is what Jerry had written in one of his pieces about what 'not' to feed your animals and this is what he has written about garlic...
It does not matter whether the onions, chives or garlic are fresh, cooked or dried, they are toxic. Their effects are not immediately noticeable as with grapes and raisins, but with time, they are just as fatal. They cause Heinz body anemia, a form of hemolytic anemia that destroys red blood cells and kidney damage. It is not certain how much must be ingested to be toxic, so do not feed your best friend any table scraps containing onions, chives or garlic. The symptoms that manifest are secondary to the anemia. Pale gums, rapid heartbeat, weakness, vomiting, bloody urine and lethargy are all signs of Heinz body anemia. Treatment for Heinz body anemia involves blood transfusions, the administering of oxygen and a specific fluid therapy. I hope this helps. As always, thank you for stopping by.:)

I have been saving this article Denise for when I could give it the full attention it deserves. Your articles inspire and caress us I swear, and as for taking on a Rescue dog, well you know how I am 100% behind you on that dear friend. Even my little Raff took a good 6 months to learn to trust again, and if you could have seen him terrified when he was in the rescue home, it would have broken your heart. This is such a fantastic article, with amazing images. I feel I know Bugg and sweet Tee so well..Our dogs give back so much love and loyalty. I have had 9 rescues in 30 years and I will go on taking on a rescue dog every time..They all deserve a Second Chance, and what you reap back is totally priceless.. I love you for being the amazing woman you are Denise, and having such a loving and open heart when it comes to pets..You are a Star in my constellation dear friend.Hugs\0/xxx
