Many animals are beneficial to people. However, there are also harmful animals.

Some harmful effects of animals

Among the animals that do the most harm to people are parasites. Parasites are animals that feed on other animals and people. Some of these animals live on the skin, hair or inside the body of other animals and people, too. Bed bugs also feed on peoples blood. They live on walls and wooden floors, in chairs, beds, mattresses and pillows. They usually come out at night to feed on their host. Bed bug bites cause itchiness that can be irritating.

Do you happen to have head lice (singular, louse)? You can have head lice when you come in contact with other people who have them. These lice can make your head itchy. Fleas, ticks and mites are tiny parasites that live on the skin of furry animals such as dogs and cats cause skin ailments such as scabies.

And how do some parasite like hookworms, tapeworm, roundworms, pinworms and flukes come to live inside the body of a person?

The food we eat or the water we drink may have the fertilized eggs or the larvae of some parasite worms. Fish and some other seafood that are eaten raw and meat that has eggs or larvae of parasitic worms. In short, some animals are parasitic, and some are carriers of parasites.

The animals discussed below are carriers of germs. Ordinary houseflies step on rotten things and then on food. If a person happens to eat foods contaminated by germs carries by flies, he or she might have diarrhea.

Mosquitoes feed on people’s blood. Anopheles mosquitoes are carriers of germs that cause malaria. This is a serious disease that may affect the kidneys, liver, blood and brain. Dengue, a disease that causes severe muscle and bone pain, comes from the bite of the mosquito Aedes Aegypti. Take note that the mosquitoes are only the carriers of the germs that cause the disease. Malaria is caused by a parasite called Plasmodium falciparum. Dengue is cause by flavi virus. These are both carried by two different kind of mosquito. When they bite humans and other animals, they transmit the disease.

When a person is bitten by a rabid (mad) dog, he or she is likely to have the disease called rabies. This disease, which is caused by a virus, can cause paralysis of the eye and facial muscles and then death.

Leptospirosis is cause by bacteria in the urine of rats. This can be transferred to people through open wounds. Its symptoms are headache, muscle pains, inflammation of the eyes and skin rush.

Animals with cloven (divided) hooves such as pigs and cows maybe affected by foot and mouth disease cause by a virus. An infected animal develops blisters filled with fluids in soft tissues like the tongue, gums, and nostrils and in the soft tissue between the hooves. People can also be infected by the virus.

Bird flu is an infectious disease of birds also caused by a virus. The virus can be easily transmitted through bird droppings and uncooked meat. The disease can infect people and spread easily, causing much danger.

Animals can cause injury to people. This usually happens when people are the one’s who disturb animals in their habitat.

Large animals with sharp, pointed teeth can inflict wounds, cause fracture or even death.

Dogs and cats may also bite and scratch when they are angry.

Birds can also inflict wound with their beaks and sharp claws.

Horses, carabaos, and mules have strong legs and sharp hooves as well as strong teeth. They can kick and bite. Goats and carabaos can inflict wounds with their horns. Deer can do the same with their antlers. Elephants and wild boars have sharp tusk that can also wound people.

Some snakes have poison. A bite from a poisonous snake can cause death, if not attended to immediately. A snake which coils its body around a person can choke the person to death.

Insects like ants, bees and wasp secrete poison. Their bites cause redness, swelling and numbness.

Other insects are harmful to people because they destroy plants the people use as food. Examples of these are locust and rats.

The larvae of may insects feed on plants. Like locust, these larvae can destroy food crops. The insect called silver fish causes damage to clothes, books and even leather. Some kinds of moth also cause damage to clothes.

In general though, people do far more harm to animals than the other way around. We eat them, torture them, and destroy their habitats.
