First there is Jet, not a significant name for an alpha male cat, but don't dare be mislead by the toned down kind of name, since when it suits him, he can howl like a banshee! Able to send most challengers scurrying in every which direction. Jet has managed to dodge every reckless car dashing up our communal driveway for the past four years, even the ravages of tick bite fever and daily cat fights in the neighborhood.

The Fearless Hop

In action he is a sight for sore eyes, at the hint of a feline intruder, he would start that ear piercing howl and would immediately go into what I suppose, would be his attack mode. He would immediately go into a trance-like state, eyes fixated on the hapless intruder. Next, his four legs would stiffen like pieces of wood, then his back, arching into an n shape, he would hop around his quarry in a series vertical hops in a fixed routine of, one "fearless hop" directly at the extremely perplexed intruder and then two unmistakable hops backwards.

Usually this comical war dance, reminiscent of the New Zealand Rugby team's Hacka! which is aimed at putting the fear of death into their opposition. Usually Jet's dance has the other cat slinking off, not sure whether it was the appropriate action to take or not.

Sir Thomas arrives...

The first displays of Jet's war dance had abated over time and we had all but forgotten about his strange routine.until, Thomas the white cat arrived. Sir Thomas was decked out with a pure leather collar and a shiny silver bell, the day he arrived here. His owner was moving into a non pet friendly apartment and since we knew him, we offered to give him a new home. Jet was already out, doing the town when Thomas arrived the previous evening.

Returning for breakfast, he is usually famished and makes an immediate beeline for the kitchen to gobble down his favorite crunchy bits. Only this morning, we were awakened by the return of the banshee. As we heard that blood curdling howl, we were frozen rigid with shock, it was 4:30am. My wife was the first to arrive on the scene at the kitchen, I was there on her heals, the scene that greeted our eyes was of Jet doing his war dance, the stiff legs, one jump forward, followed by two distinct jumps backwards routine, while all the time that eery sound continued.

War Dance and Rocky Shadow boxing.

Thomas, on the other hand was equally bewildered and sat on a table on his hind legs, back against the wall, doing a sort of shadow boxing routine with his eyes closed. Just then my daughter who sleeps on the far side of the house, came in, all sleepy eyed,
when suddenly Thomas, who favored her, took a flying leap, landing on her head, where he hung on for dear life. My daughter now fully awake was yelling at us to take him off her head. I don't recall having ever experienced such an hilarious site before. My wife and I were howling with laughter at this spectacle.

Jet doing the war dance, Thomas shadow boxing with one paw while clinging for dear life, with the other to her hair, my daughter shouting at us to dislodge him and us roaring with laughter. Try as we may, we couldn't budge him. She had to go into the next room, before he reluctantly let go of her hair. still hissing and growling, he ran to a spot underneath a cupboard where he stayed.

In the days that followed, we tried out various new maneuvers to avoid another incident like that. Eventually Jet and Thomas struck up a kind of truce, with only an occasional mild war dance from Jet and a Rocky training routine from Thomas. Until that is, when Harry the rooster arrived two weeks later.

My daughter had found him huddled next to our front gate post. His head was covered in a red and greenish colored dye reminiscent of some or other sacred sacrifice of some sort, as several of them have started moving into the neighborhood recently.

She picked him up and brought him home in case he he did get caught and put into a kind of stew where he would be the main ingredient.

Shenanigans and Crunchy bits

Harry had just had a long cool drink of water from Jet and Thomas' bowl, when Thomas ventured into the kitchen, we were having some morning coffee discussing our plans with Harry, my daughter was suggesting a course of action when suddenly she was cut short mid sentence. You guessed it, Thomas was getting ready to make a dash for her head again, only this time she was wise to the possibility and caught him in mid air. This cat must have lead a very sheltered life before meeting up with the likes of us. Harry on the other hand was completely unperturbed by these shenanigans and was pecking at Jet's crunchy bits.

After moving Thomas to the safety of the adjoining room, peace again returned to our home. We weren't sure how jet was going to react to Harry, while we were making several hasty phone calls trying to find lodgings for Harry, to prevent him from becoming someone's meal. My daughter had just put down a bowl of popcorn kernels, and some fresh water as well as some newspapers, in the spare room. She then went to the kitchen to get Harry.

The Escaped Sacrifice

Jet, having just returned from his night crawl, was now getting ready for a nice nap, had ventured into the same room and sprawled out on the dresser in the far corner, out of sight. Just as she put Harry down, The banshee started up and the rhythmic thump, thump, thump on the dresser top. This time it was Harry's turn to jump up onto my daughter's shoulder. After taking jet out to another room, Life once again returned to normal.

My best friend, who was recently widowed, had moved in with his daughter, also recently widowed, it really is so sad. I was asking him, where I could find someone who would take in a sacrificial escapee rooster, someone who wasn't going to turn him into a meal. We were quite clear about that. I was very happy when he told me that his daughter had various animals, chickens, geese, ducks, rabbits, dogs and several cats all living on her property. I wanted to know if the animals all got along well and he assured me that they did. He was going to ask her if she had room for one more.

Adventures Of The New Kid On The Block Sphynx4

The animals seemed to tolerate each other and the war dances and shadow boxing seemed to have come to an end when for some sneaky reason Harry decided to peck at the the two cat's tails, while they were soaking up the morning sun one morning, well consternation was so severe The neighbors Jack Russell dog, Rolfe offered to take Harry to his new lodgings free of charge. Peace has since returned and Harry has settled in nicely in his new dwellings. He is ruling the roost, since Pauli his pre predecessor had died of old age.

As for Jet and Thomas, there seems to be a kind of en-passe between these two bachelors these days. A stray we call Ginger, which used to occasionally pop in for some free grub, is rubbing noses with Thomas who seems a more home-bound sort of a guy and usually lounges around on a step at the back of the house, this is probably due to the fact that he has been neutered. So until the next adventure, we can now settle down to some form of normalcy.

Ps. Harry's new owners named him Houdini due to his escape qualities. They were very pleasantly surprised to hear that we shared the same sentiments, Harry Houdini.

Awesome cat story. We have chickens and cats too, its fun to watch, I was rather surprised that none of the cats ever really seem to show interest in them.

I think I met Harry at a coffee shop one time. He was ordering a double shot no fat latte..... WE talked politics for a few minutes. Neat guy for someone with four legs and no clothing!

Incidentally Ginger was a cat my brother had in India and it was a stray kitten that he picked up on the road and brought home. Gave her life until she went on an adventure and fell into an electrical transformer and had her stomach and paw along with her tail destroyed by the current.

She came home to my brother and lived for 4-5 days till he couldnot take her torture any more despite giving her the treatment from the vets.

So we had to put her down... She was a stray can who brought us immense happiness, extremely photogenic too....

Aianna, it's so sad when bad things happen to animals, I feel for him. There is a Catholic saint, St Francis of Asisi who shows us many good reasons for being associated with all animals, thank you for reading:-))
