Help for New Writers, What to Write when you don't know what to Write

I am forever amazed at how many people join paid to write sites, such as Wikinut, then don't write a single thing. Here is a tip on writing your first page.

New Members

If you have taken the time to join a paid to write site, you need to get your feet wet by actually writing something. With sites where writers are paid per view, like Wikinut, the first page to write for those sites may be an introduction to yourself, or a bit about yourself. This is especially good if you do not know where to start, or are suffering a moment of writers block.

Introduce Yourself

You might call it “Meet Mark Gordon Brown”. However that would be silly, since that is my name.

I suggest writing a short bit about yourself, either from the first person, or third. This should be at least 300 words, to give the reader a bit of value and to really initiate yourself into writing.

As such you should tell people where you live, what you like, and what you intend to write about. If I were to write such a page, I might say “Mark Gordon Brown hails originally from Michigan where he was known as Marky 3000 a strong force in the Punk, and Goth culture, back in the 1980's and 90's...” and I would conclude with something like “Mark now resides in Alberta, where he lives with his wife, and step daughter, on a hobby farm where he keeps unusual pets such as sheep, and ducks. His son is currently serving with the US navy. Follow Marks diverse writing as he covers everything from the environment, to travel, to how to improve your Wikinut article, and pet care and exotic pets”.
Note that as an established writer, I linked each topic to an article I have already published, when you have other pages, you should do the same!

Then What?

If you have bothered to take the time to join such a site, at least go the next step and actually produce something. Once published you should e-mail your introduction page to friends and family to establish regular readers and followers. Then look around on the site to see what others are doing.

Wikinut also has the advantage that you can republish your older material that you have published on sites such as Triond, Bukisa, and Factoidz (anywhere that you still own the copyright and the right to republish). As such if you are stumped about writing a new page for Wikinut, just use one you have published already, just let the moderator know that this is your work and where you have it published already. I do suggest changing the title, or summary a bit, just to be a little more professional. Read this page on writing a good title and summary.

Make some friends on the writing site and write your next page.

If you think you can write something that people will want to read, join me here on Wikinut, and get Paid per view. Click here to get started!

Great advice for newbues. But one thing: was your first page also about yourself? Because I remember you publishing a page titles 'A few looks of Mark Gordon Brown'. It was your 89th-90th page I think. Just wondering...

Whether Marks first article was about himself or not, the important thing here is that writing a little about oneself as a way of introducing oneself to the Wikinut community is still the thing to do. Before anyone asks, no my first article on Wikinut wasn't about me. If we were at a Toastmaster's International club meeting, we would call what Mark is suggesting the new members "Ice Breaker" speech. The first speech that every new Toastmaster has to give is a two minute speech all about themselves. It breaks the ice for them and gets them speaking in front of the group. It works for Toastmasters and writing about oneself will break the ice for a new writer if he has a problem finding something else to write about.

It is true that introducing ourself is a way of alighting things up. But I think that's why we have the Biography section in our editting Wikinut section. Still, that was a good way to put it. :)

NO, My first page was NOT about myself, because I knew what to write about!
This is for people who are new and don't know how to get started.. they dont know what to write.
If you know what to write.. then you can save this idea for when you have writers block.

let sam know
he is losing a poet
who the world wants to know

.....And in you I see a writer with a wonderful gift; capable of such beautifully eloquent writing. You are a true artist and are, in my opinion, unequalled in your ability to express yourself. I am, truly, your fan and enjoy our prosaic connection

Wise Appreciation

Thy words of wisdom,
The evaluation
Of a prosaic poet,
Is in itself
A sign of divinity
Upon whose shoulders
Rests human dignity
To appreciate is in it
A gift divine,
It’s like drinking love
With eyes,
Like wine

well again.. the intro idea was for those people who join, and have no idea what to write for their first page..
just to get your feet wet.
DynamicLethargyFilms your feet are good and wet... an intro page even now would serve as a good place to have links to several articles though.

Thanks for the tips Mark :) and thanks for the message you just headed my way, I'll make a note of that...anyway, I thought it was great the way you highlighted the republishing option - many people overlook it and it's a fantastic way of making extra revenue :) Go Wikinut!!

Excellent tips Mark.

I don't think I am going to continue writing for this site. The spamming by Aiyanna and her other aliases has continued. If Wikinut can not control this issue, then it's not worth it for me to continue writing for a site where I am not welcome. Please refer to my last article on cyberbullying.

I'm sorry to post this comment on your page, but I am a respectable journalist with a lot of passion to write and share my talents with the rest of the world and it saddens me that I can't write with peace of mind.
