The Smart Phone has started a revolution in Human life


Introduction

A smart phone is a mobile phone built on a mobile operating system, with more advanced computing capability and connectivity than a normal phone. The popularity and range of smart phones has grown with geometric progression, but it is generally not known that the first smart phone appeared on the scene in 1992. The word smart phone had at that time not been coined, but the phone called Simon could not only make calls, but also offered a calendar, world time, address book, notepad and email. It also had a touch screen and cost $899.00.

Further developments

During the late 90's, Nokia developed a range of phones which were the most advanced at that time. The phones numbered the Nokia 9000 were followed by the 9210, 9300 and 9500. In 1997 Ericsson launched the first official smart phone named Penelope.

Only about 200 of these phones were manufactured. In 2000 Ericsson building on the Penelope platform launched the R380. This was the first phone to be marketed as a smart phone. The R380 was the first phone to use the Symbian OS. Smart phones were now catching the imagination of the public. In 2002 to cater to this greater public interest the P 800 with its full qwerty keyboard appeared. It was launched by the newly merged Sony Ericsson.

Further progress, Multimedia Phones

There was further development with the launch of the N-series of smart phones by Sony Ericsson in 2005.These were marketed as multimedia computers. These are still in the market. The iPhone now appeared. This was in 2007. The iPhone associated with Apple was a great hit. Part of the success of this phone was due to the App Store. To date almost 200,000 commercial and free Apps are available for iPhone customers.

Development of Android

In 2008 the Android appeared backed by Google, HTC, Intel and several other influential companies, Android were new and exciting. It revolutionized the concept of Smart phones. Android in a short time has become a favorite OS for smart phone manufacturers. In 2009 many companies like Nokia'™s Ovi Store, Windows Marketplace for Mobile and Blackberry App World launched their own apps. Android market share grow from 3 per cent at the start of 2009 to nearly 20 per cent. In 2010 an event of great importance took place. Apple announced that it had reached the figure of 3 Billion download mark on its App Store.

New phones like the iOS 4 and the iPhone 4 appeared on the scene. Android made its presence felt in the market by grabbing a 20% share. Sales of all smart phones grew by 72 per cent in 2010. The future is exciting. Right from 2012 Apple, HTC, Samsung, Nokia and every other major manufacturer is bringing out new, faster, more powerful smart phones. These new products are almost being launched on a weekly basis.

The Future

Companies are bringing out phones with bigger and brighter screens with more powerful processors. With more and more commercial Apps available, the future of the smart phone is bright. Smart phones presently make up 20% of the market share of sale of all mobile phones. This will certainly go up exponentially in the future.

Saw a meme this morning that said phones got smaller and smaller until porn could be viewed on them. Now the screens are getting bigger and bigger again. Porn is not my thing, but I found myself chuckling.
