Home aquarium is a hobby with a difference and if pursued properly this can be a long term passionate hobby to make one's life a cheerful and satisfying one. With a hope that this article will be a useful guide for the enthusiasts interested in setting up a Home Aquarium, I am presenting it here! Please go through it and leave your lovely comments...

Home Aquarium - A Hobby With A Difference!

I love keeping Pets! I have dogs as my pets. But I think having aquarium is altogether a different experience and we draw a lot of pleasure by having this at our place!

Maintaining an aquarium needs a lot of patience and dedication! I have maintained one for more than 20 years and it is really a fantastic feeling you have when you see the fish breed in your Fish tank!

To experience such a pleasure you will have to work hard and dedicate your self towards this hobby!

I am from India and we have lot of tropical aquarium fish to rear in our country!

Well nowadays with the modern transportation and the techniques we get almost all sorts of aquarium fish almost in every part of the World!

Fixing An Aquarium At Home!

First thing in setting a new aquarium is to have suitable fish tank or Aquarium for the fish. There are various sizes and shapes of Aquarium available in the market. Depending upon your suitability you can select one.

Water for the fish is another very important thing. Tap water may some times contain chlorine in it, so to counter act this there are medicines/chemicals available with your fish vendor which is known as anti chlorine, a few drops added to your tank's water should take care of this problem. (Please don't fill the tank to the brim, leave at least two to three inch free from the top)

Decorating The Aquarium.

Now having filled the tank, spread gravels at the bottom, we get white gravels and colored ones too, depending upon the taste of yours you can have the gravels of your choice.
Then have a lid or cover with light fixed in it as fish require light for their growth like any other living things!,

Fix the aerator or the Oxygen pump along with required show pieces to create an impressive scene in the Aquarium.

If possible try to get some medium sized stones with natural crevices in them, which are naturally found in any river so that the fish take shelter in these crevices and they look very beautiful while doing so! Old natural wooden pieces found in the river bed also give an impressive look to the aquarium set up! Corals make an aquarium an attractive one!

Plantation Adds life To Your Aquarium!

Now add natural plantation to the Aquarium. For this you have many aquatic plants available with your Fish vendor and try to mix two to three varieties at a time and try to create beautiful scenery!

The natural vegetation from ponds or rivers may carry infection or some natural organisms in them which may not be suitable for the aquarium fish, so in my opinion, it is better to avoid them!

Now with this all setting your aquarium is ready for the fish to enter!

Which Are The Fish To Be Included In The Aquarium?

Now coming to the selection of the fish, you will have to be careful in selecting the variety of the fish to your tank. Never over populate the tank.

Adding more would be a frustrating experience as the fish may die of over crowding!

You need to balance your aquarium with different varieties of fish as discussed below!

There are three varieties of the fish with which you need to balance your aquarium. The details about them are given below.

Surface Feeders.

First is surface feeder which feed the food material available on the surface.

These fish have their lips in the mouth to wards the upper side example are sword tail and black molly.

Bottom Feeders.

Second one is bottom feeders, these fish eat from the bottom and they are a must in any aquarium as these act as scavengers and help in keeping the fish tank clean by eating away all the food which gets at the bottom.

These fish have lips at the bottom side of the mouth.

The best examples are Cory cat fish.

You can add four of these cat fish in your tank's these fish are not very active and they tend to lie down at the bottom maximum time!

Middle Layer Feeders.

The third one is middle feeder which has lips in the center of the mouth and they can comfortably feed in the middle strata, Gold Fish, Gouramis etc. are the examples in this category.

Set Up One Now!

Now with this basic description, to start with, you can have a pair of Sword tails, A pair of Black Mollies, A pair of Gold fish, A pair of Widows, A pair of Angel fish, A pair of Kissing Gouramis or Dog Gouramis and two pairs of Cory Cat fish.

Tetras are good fish and you can also add a pair to your stock! If things go well then you can think of adding more fish to your tank!

Instead of adding very big fish, it is better to add the young fish which are small and enjoy seeing them grow in your tank.

The young ones are cuter and brightly colored and have longer life span than the grown up old ones!

Fish Foods.

Have varieties of fish food from the pet shop and don't ever over feed them ! A pinch of food in the morning and evening should be sufficient!

Addition of excessive fish food may turn the water turbid and the fish may die instantaneously.

Maintenance.

Don't change the water daily. Keep on topping it up as and when required.

Changing of the water can be done once in a month or two depending upon the waste material getting accumulated in the tank.

Keeping the tank at such a place where the fish can have natural sunlight for some time would be added advantage for the fish and for you too!

Hope with this basic information about setting up an aquarium, you can set your own aquarium!

Believe me having an aquarium is a wonderful experience and one has to have the aquarium at one's place to feel it! Thanks!

Very interesting article, the only thing I would say is I wouldn't keep goldfish in the same aquarium as tropical fish as they need water at a different temperature. Otherwise, I really enjoyed reading it and love the pictures!

Dear Ian , I have categorically mentioned in my article that I am from India (Which is a tropical country). The basic combination what I have given is more or less of tropical fish only!

The combination mentioned not only worked well for me but also to my many friends who wanted to have a new Home aquaruim!

In fact I could raise a pair of Gold Fish and Kissing Gouramis more than 5 years in the same tank together with other fish I have mentioned!

May be things may change from place to place, I have just mentioned here what I have experienced!

Thanks a lot for taking interest and reading the article and leaving an useful comment! I am impressed!

Excellently compiled information, well researched and well presented. I loved it simply. I hope you don't mind, however, if I point out the excessive and somewhat unwarranted use of exclamation mark.
