general MacArthur was the commander during the Korean war. he was dismissed for use of advocating use of Atomic weapons against China

A General who never Grew Up

General MacArthur was the Supreme Commander of all US forces in the Pacific. He is credited with leading the US to victory over Japan. At the end of the Second World War in 1945, he had become a larger than life figure and even shadowed the US president Harry Truman. The US Congress also hailed him as a great soldier. The accolades for General MacArthur are justifed as he was the single catalyst that steeled the US resolve against Japan.
At the end of the war he was appointed Chief administrator of Japan and after the Tokyo war crimes trials returned to the USA. In 1950 the North Koreans invade South Korea and the Korean War commenced. General MacArthur now a five star general was again appointed as the supreme commander of the US forces in Korea.
Mac Arthur schooled in the way to fight the Japanese could not gauge the human wave tactics of the Koreans and later the Chinese. He failed to make headway and then he made a request for a nuclear bombing of China. Mac Arthur probably thought that like an Atomic bombing of Japan another over China was of no consequence. But the situation had changed and the Russians also had the Atomic Bomb. President Truman could not risk another World War.
It was then that President Truman took a momentous decision to dismiss MacArthur. This was a surprise to the General himself. But it must be understood that MacArthur somehow did not measure up to the human wave tactics of the communists and was at his wits end. His recommendation for an Atomic bombing of China was to say the least thoughtless. It was right that he was dismissed and general Ridgeway replaced him. The fact is the General had not adjusted to the concept of nuclear war and he in fact was unfit to command the US army in Korea.

Interesting piece of information, Madan. Seems he was trigger-happy and wanted a quick resolution through the ultimate weapon! I am reminded of the off-with-his-head emperor without even turning back - of ancient time - siva

On the other hand, there would be no Superpower China and pestering North Korea if his wish were granted. Bye, Madam. My last comment here for the meantime..
