You will need to do a little bit of research on your computer. You’re going to want to know how much the maximum amount that can be accepted by the computers motherboard is. This will be in the computers owner’s manual. Next, what kind of ram is installed in it at the moment?

Research

You will need to do a little bit of research on your computer. You’re going to want to know how much the maximum amount that can be accepted by the computers motherboard is. This will be in the computers owner’s manual. Next, what kind of ram is installed in it at the moment? If you can determine the manufacturer and model numbers of the ram currently installed, this will help you greatly because you know that the ram works and there is no conflicting issues. Also you’re going to want to know how many computer ram slots are on your computers motherboard. This should be in the owner’s manual, if not you can just open the computers case and take a peak in to determine how many ram modules can fit on the motherboard. As for checking the ram information, the ram will have stickers on them with information about the ram, it will have the manufacturer, model number, the amount of ram(1024MB), the speed and which the ram runs at(800MHz), the type of ram(ddr2 6400) the timing(6-4-4-4), and if it’s a part of a dual channel kit or not.

How Much

After determining the type of ram, the amount, and how much ram you can upgrade to that your computer will accept. The next step is to determine the amount of ram that you want to upgrade to. This will greatly depend on just what you do with the computer, and what operating system that’s installed.

The minimum amount of ram needed to run Windows XP, is 1024MB, Windows Vista is 2048MB, and Windows 7 is 2048MB. Now these are minimum numbers, so more than the minimum is what you want to shoot for. If you do gaming, video editing, Photoshop media editing, or anything that’s more memory intensive, than you will need even more ram installed to run those types of applications smoothly.

Upgrade

Now that you have ordered your new ram it’s time to do the upgrade.
1. Disconnect all cable connections to your computer.
2. Pull your computer out and place it in front of you where you have easy access and where you have plenty of light to see.
3. Open up your case, there should be some screws on the back that you may need a screw driver to unscrew, thumb screws, or plastic locks that you just pop off.
4. Slide the side case panel off.
5. Make sure that you are grounded or just rub your hand against the inside of the computer case to make sure you have no static electricity on your hands.
6. Look for the ram, inside the computer.
7. Unlock the ram by pushing down on the plastic tabs on both sides of the ram modules
8. Remove the old ram
9. Carefully insert the new ram, be sure to not force it in.
10. Lock the tabs by pulling them back up.
11. Put the computer case back together
12. Plug in all of the computer cables
13. Power on your computer
14. If all goes well your computer should boot windows just as normal
15. Boot into Windows
16. To verify that the entire ram is being seen by Windows, right click on the computer icon, left click on properties. It should show the new amount of ram installed.
