Guide to the necessities to have in place in case of a natural disaster

Main

Floods, earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes. These natural disasters among others are emergencies that we all fear but are rarely prepared for.

After a major disaster, emergency response services will not be able to immediately respond to everyone’s needs so it’s important to be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for at least the first 72 hours. The most common places you will be at any time are near your work, car or home so you should be prepared at each of those locations as an emergency can occur at any given time.

One important thing that most people don’t realize is that long distance phone service is often restored sooner than local service so you should have someone out of the area that you can contact should an emergency happen. By having someone out of the area that you can contact, you can get a better idea of what is going on around you and it will be easier to figure out what your best survival options are.

Beyond that, the most important thing you must have is a disaster supply kit and a plan. Basic supplies such as food, water, first aid kits, flashlights, tools and medications are a must. This kit needs to be in an easily accessible space that you can get in a hurry. Plans should be made for all possible disasters and emergencies and what you and your family will do should one happen.

As with anything, the more time and energy you put into planning, the better off you will be in the future. When disasters occur, the majority of injuries and deaths are not from the initial disaster, but from the days leading from it when people are forced to fend for themselves. If you are prepared for anything then your chances are much better that you will be a survivor in almost any emergency.
