How the Relationship Between Uranus and Pluto Reflects Times of Immense Social Upheaval

The relationship between Uranus, the planet of awakening and liberation, and Pluto, the planet of death, destruction, annihilation and transformation, is the astrological signature for times of upheaval and profound social and cultural change.

Using astrology for purposes of prediction

As an astrologer I am acutely aware of the responsibility inherent in trying to make astrological predictions for individuals, a responsibility which is not taken lightly. I cannot, nor would I, predict that you are going to fall down and break your leg next Tuesday. I might, however, tell you that Mars is making a strong aspect to your ascendant and Moon next Tuesday, and then point out the archetypal qualities of Mars, which among other things include recklessness, and you could in fact be reckless enough to fall down and break your leg on that day. What I might say to you is "Since Mars among other things relates to recklessness, you might want to avoid reckless actions next Tuesday." In other words, I can only tell you in this case that the archetypal qualities of Mars (recklessness, anger, impulsiveness) play upon the archetypal qualities of the ascendant (physical body, personality projection) in some manner.

When it comes to making predictions for whole populations, we look at how the outer planets, from Saturn out through Pluto, relate to each other. Because these planets move slowly they remain in angular relationship to each other for a period of time, often for a number of years, as is the case with Uranus and Pluto, which we are about to discuss here.

"The times they are a changin'" - Bob Dylan

In astrology, Saturn represents the limitations and boundaries inherent in earthly life. It is the "ring pass not" of earthly existence. Prior to the discovery of Uranus in 1781, Saturn defined the limits of our lives. In those times, possibilities were very limited. An individual born prior to the discovery of Uranus had very few options open to him. In those days, if my father was a cobbler then I was destined to become a cobbler. There were virtually no opportunities available for anyone to break free of his pre-ordained station in life.

However, with the discovery of Uranus, the planet of individuation, of rebellion, of independence and autonomy, we saw rebellion and revolution in the American colonies and France, the rise of the industrial revolution, and the discovery of electricity. People were now suddenly free to travel roads not traversed by their fathers. Hundreds of thousands moved for the first time from their rural roots to the burgeoning industrial cities. There was enormous social movement and dislocation coincidental to the discovery of Uranus.

Pluto, discovered in 1930 by the astronomer/astrologer Percival Lowell, is Hades, the great lord of the underworld. Pluto represents death, destruction, annihilation, rebirth and transformation. Upon its discovery we saw the rise of the underworld of organized crime in America as a result of prohibition. We were also plunged into a world-wide economic depression. Soon after, we witnessed the beginning of the effort to harness atomic energy. Pluto, then, is the power of destruction on a mass scale.

Uranus-Pluto aspects

Uranus-Pluto "hard" aspects - conjunctions, squares and oppositions - coincide with times of great social stress, breakdown and dislocation, with movements of great rebellion against the status quo.

Now, Uranus and Pluto have conjoined in one aspect or another throughout the history of our solar system, but before 1930 the mass consciousness was not aware of it. The first time that these two planets conjoined after the discovery of Pluto was when they formed a long-term conjunction between 1963 and 1968, a time of immense social change. During that time span we saw the great strides made by the civil rights movement in America, the assassinations of both Kennedys, Medgar Evers, Martin Luther, King, Jr., and Malcolm X, widespread protests against the Vietnam War with young people burning draft cards, the police riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, and the rise of a counter culture of "sex, drugs and rock and roll" as young people turned their backs on the collective values of their parents. Music, as a reflection of the social ethic, changed dramatically. Pat Boone was out. The Beatles and Bob Dylan were in.

Now, in 2013, Uranus has moved away from its conjunction with Pluto that occurred in the sixties to where it presently forms the next "hard" aspect to Pluto, the square. This occurs between May of 2013 and May of 2018. We can expect then, that the forces that came into play in the 1960s will be back in play over the course of the next five years. In astrology, whenever two planets form a conjunction, a "seed" is planted, an idea is born, a movement commences. When those to planets form a square to each other during the course of the cyclical journey together, the "forces in play" interact anew with great power and impact. Extreme (Pluto) rebellion (Uranus) erupts again.

We already see the social dislocation being caused by austerity measures in places like Greece and Spain. Soon we will witness it in places like Italy and America. In America especially, the stars will align between 2014 and 2016 to bring about a complete financial collapse, since Pluto, while it is making its square to Uranus, will also be toggling back and forth in exact opposition to the Sun in the horoscope of the United States, a transit which occurs only every 248 years.

Get ready for a wild ride.

Never mind the stars, the people of the USA are doing it to themselves, by shopping for things made overseas they are killing their own economy (and planet too).

Hey, Mark, everything for sale in America is made in China, because all our manufacturing jobs have been moved there. What's a person to do?

I am aware that we go to Saturn turns in our lifetime and there is one actually taking place at present bringing about a lot of changes in life.
While Uranus and Neptune may be great, Saturn works out the destiny that believes in changing the past and bettering the greater lessons held in the learning to create the effect that would improve the person and make them Better than the Best.
While societies have forgotten what Creation is, they are now taking them back to see their reality first with love, joy peace understanding etc. but when that doesn't work, they change it in the fists of fury like what we are presently experiencing as that is the mode communication the Creation is not happy with the evils that are presently plaguing society and is slowly but surely reclaiming every single bit of its lost glory to bring life back to what it used to be either with love or force although love is considered to be a better option of the two.

Thanks for commenting Lady Aiyanna. While Saturn refers to becoming responsible for ourselves at a personal level, Uranus and Pluto reflect immense changes within society as a whole which affect each of us individually.

Thoroughly compelling and absorbing stuff as always Steve, especially when referring back to your April 2012 article "The American Empire Collapses..." Tell me, is there any relationship here to the fact that next year marks the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I in August 1914?

I'm sure there is some kind of relationship - there always is I would think, but I'm not sure what it might be. Thanks for commenting Lewis.

So, if Pluto's destructive influence didn't become apparent until its discovery in 1930, does that mean that its demotion to "Dwarf Planet" status will downplay its influence in the future?

Unfortunately, no. And Pluto was " demoted" by astronomers. Astrologers have not demoted Pluto. In fact, we thing it is the signature planet of the times we occupy.
