Many Wikinut writers have desired to add youtube videos to their articles. This has always been possible but many people are still struggling to figure out how to embed youtube videos in their Wikinut articles.

Should I Add A Video to my Wikinut Article?

I rarely add videos to my Wikinut articles. In the past I had dial up internet so watching videos was nearly impossible and pages that had videos took ages to load. In some cases videos do not really add anything to an article, but in other cases they add great value.

In a "how to" article where a demonstration is required a video is key, or a video to a movie trailer might be good for an article that is a movie review.

Adding videos to your article can help your article to get views if you add the tag related to your video, for example I might use the tag "Funny cat video" as I have selected a cat video to use here.

Because multiple videos really make pages load slowly I do not suggest having more than one or two related videos on any article.

How to Properly Embed a Video In a Wikinut Article

Embedding videos is part of "Advanced Formatting", note that you probably have seen links to this many times when your pages are published in the notes we moderators send back to you.

A lot of people get stuck and confused when adding a video because they think they need to create a link to the video, but you do not want to do that, you simply want to embed the video so that people see it on your article and do not have to leave your article to watch the video.

Find the video you want to use. I found a funny cat video, the url is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUNmLuNdiL8

Now.. I do NOT want to use that entire url, just the code for that video which is SUNmLuNdiL8

You have to type a bit of HTML code before and after the video code letters to get it to embed properly. I would use the square brackets located in the upper right of most keyboards and I would type - using the video's code.

[yt]SUNmLuNdiL8[/yt]

and that should do it, let me give it a test below.

Here is my video

Funny cat video.

Note that to test this out, I can also use the "Preview" button below to make sure it works before I hit "Publish".

Notes and Further Reading

Youtube videos are currently the only type of video that will work on Wikinut.

Do not get carried away adding videos where they do not add value or benefit to your article, however it should be noted that using any advanced formatting techniques does put you a wee bit closer to earning a star.

If you have linked to a video incorrectly in a previous published article you should try to correct that.

As with all writing, pornographic videos would not be allowed.

"advanced formatting techniques does put you a wee bit closer to earning a star"

I have noticed that certain such criteria move you closer to a star, links are one, having more than one section is another, photos are still one more I think.

I am not sure if I really agree entirely with this approach, as an article sometimes can be star quality without any of these, can't it, or can't it, in the eyes of a wikinut moderator?

Thanks for another informative article Mark.

The stars are purely based on how many points an article earns, more informational/factual ones also tend to be more likely to earn a star - as will original articles.

Looks a cakewalk, thanks Mark. I have not embedded any videos yet as I feel the appropriate ones are not easy to get. Sometimes that applies to images too as I rely solely on Wikimedia Commons - siva

I'm glad I came to visit this piece where I came to know that adding a tag relative to the video is as important as imbedding the video itself. Practically all my articles carry a video but without tags.

Tell me Mark, would that be the same to embed music?
And is that also done in Advanced Formatting?

By George I think I finally got it! I had to take the word "feature" out of the code first. This is the best article yet on how to embed a video! Thank you!!!
