Many people like to plan ahead the books they intend to read. Here are some tips on how to create an interesting and varied reading list.

If you are among the millions of avid readers out there, you may be wondering what to read over the year to come. This may especially be the case if you have already read every book in your house three times over! If so, it is worth considering devising a book list for yourself for the months ahead. Having a reading list will help to broaden your knowledge and reading, give you targets for your reading and possibly inspire you to read books from genres different to those that you usually read. There are several ways in which you can compile such a list and feed the bookworm within you. Here are some tips on how to create a reading list.

Internet search

There are many sites on the Internet that will tell you the titles of books that have been voted as being outstanding in the last year and may recommend titles that are yet to be published in the year ahead. These sites will usually give a review of the book, which should offer some guidance in relation to whether or not it is a book that you would enjoy reading. If you have a favourite author, type their name into a search engine and you will be able to see if they are about to get a book published in the coming months. It is often possible to order a book in advance of its day of release to ensure that you get a copy.

Ask for Recommendations

If you have friends, family or work colleagues who are avid book readers, then take their advice. Ask them what books they have read recently, what their opinion of the book was and if there is a particular author that they would recommend. Be careful to make sure that they don't give too much away though, or else you risk spoiling the story line for yourself. Once you have gathered this information, it should get you started in compiling a list of potential authors and titles to consider for your own reading list for the year.

Try New Genres

If you always read the same genres, for example, horror or crime, then consider trying out a new genre on your reading list for the year ahead. Similarly, if you only read books by a few select authors you should broaden your horizons and add on a few authors who you have never read the work of before.

Visit the library

Take a trip to your local library and ask the opinion of the librarian. They will be able to tell you of any new books on the shelves in the genre that you enjoy reading the most, or if there are particular books that have been borrowed more than others, indicating their popularity. They will often have discussed books with other library users and will be able to pass on feedback about books to you.

A reading list is a fantastic way to set yourself reading targets and to try out new genres of books. By searching the Internet and seeking the advice of friends and librarians you can create a diverse and interesting reading list for the year ahead.

Thanks for useful tips, Lizzie. I admire those who have diverse interests. Frankly, I find it tough to read tomes - siva
