How to Select Good Titles and Topics to Make More Money Online

Did you know that the title of your article and the topic you chose can make or break your earnings? Chances are that you did but did not know how to find a good title or topic to write about in order to increase your online earnings.

Picking a Good Topic

By now you may have noticed that poems and stories to not get many views or high earnings. This is because people rarely search for stories on the Internet. Poems are sometimes searched for, and often “love” poems, as if a person is wanting a poem to use in a card or letter, but of course there are millions of poems already out there so a person is fighting a flooded market.

How to” articles tend to do well as far as topics are concerned. We all know how to do something, but if it is something that already has been written about a million times, such as “How to Care for a Cat”, your article is not likely to get many views.

Factual articles are also things people look up on the Internet, such as facts about health conditions, gardening, and so on. Of course writing such articles is work unless you are an expert in a certain field and can offer added value to a topic.

Another point to consider is if your topic is consumer driven. Stories and poems generally do not generate clicks on advertisements (for example if a weight loss product ad should pop up). However if you write an article on weight loss (although this is a very saturated market) and an ad for a weight loss product is featured you might get clicks on that ad. Of course it should be noted that you cannot encourage people to click ads, particularly if you use Google Adsense, as this will get your account banned.

Try to write something that people might be looking for, and something where the market is not too saturated. If you are writing to a saturated market, try to narrow it down to get more views. For example if writing about weight loss you can narrow it down to weight loss for men, or women, or weight loss using certain fruits.

Picking a Good Title

A good title has at least 3 key words in it, and is not all in capital letters.

Think of the difference between “LETS WASH SAMI” and “How To Give a Cat A Bath”. Which article would you be more likely to read if looking for information on washing your cat?

Search engines do look at titles, so do people who are selecting what link to click on when they use a search engine. Search engines rarely show titles all in capital letters, have you ever seen one? In fact Wikinut rules state that titles all in capital letters are to be rejected. If you have any articles with titles all in capital letters you should edit them and fix the title and see if that helps generate more views.

A title that uses more key words such as “how to”, “cat” and “bath”, will naturally generate more views. Your title should match a short phrase a person might type into a search engine if you really want more views.

Of course there may be times when you want a different title for effect, and I have done that myself, but in this case you understand that the title has a lower SEO (Search Engine Optimization) value and simply have to accept that.

You can do a google search for a title, type your title into a search engine (in quotes) and see how many identical titles it finds. Fewer is better, but be sure to stick to a good title in general or nobody will be looking for it so even if there is little competition if the title is weak in SEO it wont matter.

Mark, I agree with you about titles. From my perspective I will ALWAYS reject a title in upper case letters only and I firmly believe in the value of a good title.

One suggestion - take your title (the whole title) and drop it into a Google search, when there are results that provide an identical match then think again about changing the title. It is also important to make it imaginative and challenging.

I tend to write more to share my thoughts - making money is secondary. Of course, I know I should not let down the site! siva

Mark, you are so right. Recently I wrote a couple of articles for Triond, the word 'Confessions of ...." in the title. I doubt I've evdr had so many views in a 24 hour period before. Thanks for reminding us all of how important titles are.
