We all know how important it is for dogs to be walked regularly. For them it is a major way we say “I love you”. We think when we pat our dogs we are saying “I love you” but they can actually prefer going for a walk. Not that we have to do only one or the other but just ask any dog if they want to go for a walk and see what they say!

How to Walk Your Dog

We all know how important it is for dogs to be walked regularly. For them it is a major way we say “I love you”. We think when we pat our dogs we are saying “I love you” but they can actually prefer going for a walk. Not that we have to do only one or the other but just ask any dog if they want to go for a walk and see what they say!

The Collar

Get a good collar. A dog wears a collar all the time. Make sure it is not too tight (you should be able to slip two fingers under it comfortably) but not too loose (it should not come off over the dog's head). A harness is an option, too. Find one you both like.

The Leash

Get a leash that is a length that is comfortable for you. You can use a leash that is too long by holding it further down but one that is too short is just uncomfortable for both of you. The leash should not pull on the dog's collar as you walk.

Doggy Business

Let the dog do whatever “business” is necessary before going on the walk. Sniffing for a good place to pee is not conducive to a good walk.

Pace

Walk a bit quicker at the beginning of the walk. This helps the dog tire out a bit while keeping distractions to a minimum.

Every Day

Walk regularly. A 30 minute walk every day is considered the base for any dog. High energy dogs need more. You could use the walk, too. Just go.

Our dogs are faithful companions. By walking with them regularly we fulfil our duty to them as their owners and help them live healthier lives while doing good things for our health, too. Let's go for a walk!

How can people not walk their dogs when it brings them so much joy?
