How to Wear a Saree’ for Beginners

This nine-yard wonder is enough to augment the grace quotient of a feminine silhouette. A saree, as we know, is unstitched ethnic attire that is draped around the body. Usually worn as everyday attire across the Indian subcontinent, a saree is the first choice when it comes to flaunting a traditional look.

The best part about this traditional garment is that a woman of any body type, whether slim or bulky, can wear it without looking out of place! One of the most striking features of a saree is that it can be draped in a variety of ways - Nivi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, and more. The versatility of this garment makes it an even more attractive choice when it comes to dressing up for special occasions.

Now, not knowing how to drape a saree can be a distressing affair, but believe it or not, wearing a saree is rather simple and with a few simple tricks, it can be made even easier!

Before we start, let us understand the 3 parts that make up a saree:
Source
1.Blouse: The top wear, almost like a crop top that hugs the body. A blouse can be a readymade or a stitched one.
2.Petticoat: Bottom wear like a long skirt that acts as a support to drape the saree. A petticoat is generally available as a readymade one.
3.Saree: An unstitched long garment, like a wraparound skirt, a saree comes in a variety of materials, designs, textures and more.

A few handy tips to remember to make the draping easier:
a)The blouse and petticoat should match with the saree. Also the fit of the blouse is important, as a loosely fitted blouse can give a weary look.
b)The petticoat should be tightly worn so that it stays at the waist, as the saree has to be tucked in it.
c)The footwear should be put on before draping the saree as this helps to drape the saree at the perfect length.
d)To keep the saree in place use safety pins or saree clips, this makes the draping look neat.

Enough gyaan, now let us understand an easy way to drape a saree
Source:
a)Wear blouse, petticoat and footwear first.
b)Hold one end of the saree from its top edge and tuck it in the petticoat starting from the right side of the waist and moving to the left. (ensure the lower hem of the saree is above the ground by about an inch)
c)From the left hand bring the saree around the waist, tucking it from the back to the center.
d)When one round of tucking is completed, 6-8 plates of 5-6 inches each have to be made. Make the pleats and tuck it in the petticoat. (To secure the pleats in place just pin them up)
e)Next take the open side of the drape and draw it across the back to the front side from the right side to the left shoulder.
f)This length is for the pallu which can either be pleated and pinned or left drooping after pinning one hem of the saree to the shoulder.

And we’re done! Accessorize and step out, and the glances of admiration shall begin.
