Star Pages are Wikinut’s way of mentoring our writing efforts to help us improve our articles/pages. Exactly how does one get a “Star Page?” Along with my review of the basic principles, I hope to shed some new light on this subject!

Principals to incorporate in your pages to elevate them to Star Level

1. Catchy Title: I usually run my titles through Google Adwords. If you can start your title out with the words “How to” it will get more hits. However, even without running your title through Google you can get advice from Wikinut regarding a catchy title.
2. A good Description: Use an eye catcher description that lets your reader know they will benefit in some way by reading your article! A description that arouses their curiosity will also help you get readers/hits!
3. Relevant Topics: Your articles should be about subjects that the majority of the Internet users are interested in. Just because you like a certain topic does not mean everyone else likes it. On the first page of Yahoo with all the advertisements before you get into your email there is a section to the right called “Trending Now.” You can find topics that people are interested in today and hopefully for a few more days that you can write about.
4. Problem Solving: Most people surfing the Internet are trying to find a solution to some type of problem. Think about why you, your friends and family surf the Internet and that should give you a clue!
5. At least 400 words: Your page should contain at least 400 words to give it enough substance. I am sure that exceptions are made for poetry!
6. At least 2 pictures: Photographs and/or graphics serve as eye candy and give the readers a chance to rest their eyes!
7. Well written with no grammatical or spelling errors: It also helps to bold the words that you feel should pop out for the reader, and, try not to use sentences that are a paragraph long!
8. You must incorporate Headings: Your page should have headings to make it easier for the Internet reader to scroll down and skim your article in order for them to see if it applies to what they need. Remember that most Internet surfers are in a big hurry to get information to solve some type of problem and they know that they have to sift through several articles to get to the truth! This is true especially nowadays when everyone seems to be trying to make money from the information they offer you. The Internet surfer has to do a great deal of reading to get to the free information.
9. Non-repetitive: Try not to drone on and on repeating your information in many different (though very artistic) forms like the politicians do. This is very typical for us female writers because our brains are wired like spaghetti and every topic relates to every other topic. If you don’t believe me ask your husband or your brother! Before you know it your page has turned into a monstrosity and will scare off the reader.
10. Add a little sense of humor: People love to take time out to laugh!! I once read through a very lengthy article that initially I was not really interested in. However, the way it was written captivated me so much that I could not stop reading and laughing!!! After I read that article my spaghetti brain completely forgot what I was searching for in the first place.
11. Be original: This is where a problem comes to many writers here on Wikinut! They just want to use Wikinut to republish their already published articles. This confuses the search engines and it does not rank well with Google! Google filters out all duplicate content! They will not feature your article on the first page of the Internet users’ search if it contains a high percentage of duplicate content. You must let your moderator know if your article has been written before and if so what changes you have made.
12. Tags: You need to make sure you provide enough tags so that the search engine will pick up your article! For example! Let’s say you are writing about gardening! You can use the tags, gardening, gardening tools, soil for gardening, when to plant, healthy plants, soil conditions, tomato bugs, fertilizer, and many more. Anything that has to do with gardening is fair game as long as it is related to your subject matter. However, if you are female everything relates to everything else!! Wow! What a conundrum!!
13. Read your article out loud: This may sound silly to some people but it really works for me!! When I read my article out loud I catch any mistakes in grammar! Although, my Microsoft Word catches any spelling errors one still has to be careful for words that are similar but with different meanings. For example, I first put catching in Word for the previous sentence, and, it did not catch it!! Microsoft Word was going to let it slide. When I read it out loud I realized that it was grammatically incorrect.
14. Sleep on it: Regardless of what other writing websites may claim, a good article cannot be written in 20 minutes! Two years ago Yahoo Voices touted this information and as a result they have lost 93% of their revenue because Google considers them to be a content farm! Google will not allow any of their writers’ articles good or bad on the first page of any search. If you are in doubt about your article, don’t publish it until the next day. This works really well for me. You see the Internet is not about quantity as much as it is about quality.

What does a “Star Page” really mean?

When you incorporate all the points above and get your Star Page other than giving you the feeling of utter elation like a child who has been given a star in kindergarten, your Star Page means that you should get more hits. More hits in turn mean more earnings for you in the long run. Wikinut does not pay you just for your Star Pages! Your Star Pages actually have to make money for them via way of page views/hits or clicks on advertisements.

Wikinut is doing us a big favor by offering the Star Page Incentive due the fact that it is a learning tool for their writers!

Another benefit is that a Star Page catches the reader’s eye which adds some creditability to your page and the likelihood that they will read it first.

What about the poet?

Well, the poet can become very disheartened and downright depressed. Hay! St. Johns Wart is good for that and is sold over the counter! I may go back on it myself pretty soon! At any rate, I can fully understand why so many very gifted poets here on Wikinut would be a bit discouraged when they see their fans getting Star Pages and them not…even though they have put so much love and talent into their poetry. Seriously this makes me sad too!!!

I think that the only time I got a Star Page for any of my poetry was when it contained information about plants and gardening which is something that most Internet surfers look for on the net. Poets are very much under appreciated!! Just like those famous painters in our history books, poets are usually not given credit until they are gone from this world.

It is hard for a creative person like a poet to always get Star Pages because oftentimes trying to get that Star Page stifles our creativity. Keep in mind all you poets out there that poetry for seasons and holidays gets more hits! Subject matter is also very important for the poet! If perhaps your poem is about a popular subject, or a how to poem it should get more hits! Yes and many people love romantic poems that perhaps they can give to their lover for a special day.

Conclusion

Unless you do a whole lot of moonlighting, it will take some time for the average writer to make money publishing their articles and/or poems on the Internet. Once we finally think we know what kind of information people are looking for things turn around and change. The Internet audience is very fickle indeed!! Someday your writing will pay off monetarily but until then bask in the joy that you bring to your fans and the joy they bring to you!! I truly believe that Wikinut is one of the greatest writing platforms on the Internet, but, be patient because they are new and it takes time to get recognized. Therefore, stick with the principals above; keep your eye on Google’s algorithm, because it does change every now and then. By doing this you will get the hits you desire. If you don’t know what Google’s algorithm is then Google it!! If you never Google anything then you really are in trouble! Just joking!!

I am pleased to have moderated this article and have to say that what you say is absolutely correct; it is about quality, quality and more quality; truth is pictures, spelling, and size of your article does matter greatly. There are some writers that are simply interested in publishing at all cost and often the result is poor quality contributions that inspire no-one to read them.

Originality is so vital, even when you intend to re-publish articles from other sites you contribute to it is best that they are re-crafted specifically for Wikinut. Often, time changes things, or provides a new outlook, that should be written in to the new article; otherwise it has almost no value and will be marked down.

I want writing quality to improve on this site and everything you have said is a vital contribution and to be applauded.

Using sections, and adding links, also helps get a star, as does adding a video or using other advanced formatting techniques.

Excellent piece, but you cannot attach more than one image in a section. If you want to add more pictures, you must have more sections, which will become shorter and unacceptable.

GV, It may not be possible to have more than one picture per section, but simply add more sections in order to add more pictures. Make sure the section name adds value to the article and add a sentence or more that relates to the picture then you can have all the pictures you need.

Thanks Judy for your excellent article spiced with humor! Sometimes, I feel it is better to write our way and not worry much about the star. Of course, it is the icing on the cake (let the moderators not get ideas!). It should attract readers' interest and add value. I try to convey with clarity and also meet the basics of this site like adding image. Video is not easy for the type of articles I write. I like Wikinut for the interaction with other contributors more than anything else. That too was the case with Yahoo! Voices, but the thought of never being eligible for payments, being a non-US resident, was a bit too much! I am not yet a saint but, maybe, finding my way! siva

Thank you Siva for following me and for all you contribute to our writing experience. I am very disappointed that Yahoo Voices does not pay their over the seas writers! No one should be taken advantage of like that whether you are or are not a Saint. We love you Siva!!

Thank you so much Peter Giblett for your quick moderation of my page and your vote of confidence. Also I thank Wikinut for not making the same mistakes that other writing platforms have made by pushing their writers to write an abundance of content with no real value then just to clutter up the Internet.

Very useful article and I will use it as a guide to improve my writing technique, however you did not mention the easiest way to achieve a Star page on here is to simply, copy and paste other people's work from the internet like some people are known to do.

Robb714 Thank you for commenting that my article is useful!! However, you are very wrong about people on Wikinut getting a Star Page by copying and pasting someone else's work from the Internet because Google would catch that and consider it duplicate content and they would be kicked out of Wikinut for plagiarizing someone else's content. I can't even copy my own articles and republish them without changing the title and overhauling them completely because Google would catch that and penalize me for duplicate content. When I have an article that is stagnating on Yahoo Voices and it has gotten very few hits, yet I can't use Yahoo Voices Platform to update it, rather than leave it just sitting there in cyberspace, I will overhaul it so it will get more hits/views on Wikinut.
The sad thing about Yahoo Voices is that many of my good old articles that need overhauling cannot be changed on their platform because I fell into Yahoo's trap of putting them in a category where I was promised (lied to really) that they will get more hits. Unfortunately in that category I am not able to update them. I guess I will have to come up with a poem that lays out the steps to get a star page in very easy terms for those of us including me who have trouble reading a lengthy article. I apologize for making my article too lengthy! I too have trouble reading lengthy articles because my fans write at least 4 articles to one of my articles. I love reading my fans articles but sometimes can’t get through them all in a timely manner. Even if you get information as a result of Research from the Internet which is where most of us get our information you have to put whatever you find in your own words and then list the source. Sorry you feel that people can get away with using other peoples content.

My dear Judy, he just did it again and is so prevalent in doing so, it just gets my goat. As a writer that works so hard to originate my own content, it burns my bacon. All you have to do is copy and paste his titles (he can’t even be original in that) into Google and you get where he lifted the articles from without giving the original author credit, it just very sad, not to mention he is a moderator, it just makes me sick but he supposedly believes in karma, if those are even his words, it will come back to him, as for me, I am trying to let it go.

Dear Judy,
Critical analysis of the question of article acquiring star status. But the criteria is not uniform. In every article it is not possible to write more than 400 words. The content should be evaluated.

I am so sorry I missed that! Point taken!! The content must be good too but I can't put it all on one page or it does get a bit cumbersome!! Why would anyone get the idea that you would not have to present worthy content?? That should be automatically understood! Sorry I left that out though! Thanks for your suggestion!!

Souvik, Sir - as a site moderator I have seen articles of barely 50 words being submitted. These do little more than explain a basic proposition and do not go into any detail. The same can also be said for articles of 200 words, they skim the subject and propose no solution.

I propose that on any subject it is possible to write a minimum of 300 words. Ensure you have a minimum of 3 sections with 3 or 4 paragraphs per section and you will have enough detail behind your basic proposition.

Dear Peter,
But the thing is length of article depends on types of articles. In my articles where I put in 7 to 8 photos the number of words dont exceed more than 150. The photos speak for themselves. But informative articles cross 300 words.

Why do so many people think it is hard to write 300 words! Oh my goodness!! I have to keep myself from writing less than two thousand words!! In 20 minutes I am up to 500 words depending on my level of inspiration! The things that are time consuming are the research, pictures, links and videos. If I get inspired on a certain subject I can't stop writing soon enough. Before I know it my page is too big. I wish someone would say how many words are too many for one page! That I need to know!! I guess I am just one of those persons who types very fast (100 words a minute) and who does not want to leave anything out. I love detail!! Call me weird!! Please someone tell me how many words are too many!! That I need to know!! I just checked and this silly comment of mine was approximately 150 words! LOLOLOL Whoops another word!! Love to all
