The first step when making a martini is find out which a person would prefer. A person may also have a personal choice the brand of gin or vodka.

Up or on the rocks

A martini can be served two ways. Up in a martini glass or on the rocks in a highball glass. If the martini is served up, the glass should be chilled. You can chill the glass by putting it in the freezer or chilling the glass with ice.

Dry martini

A main ingredient of a martini is vermouth. Many people choose to order a martini dry. This infers putting either a dash of vermouth or no vermouth at all into the martini. You may want to clarify by asking the person how dry they would like a martini. If someone states very dry, do not bother putting any vermouth in the mix.

Dirty martini

A person who likes a martini dirty wants the extra ingredient of olive juice added to the mixture. By doing this you add approximately a half of an ounce of olive juice into the martini mixture.

There are also choices of a garnish for a martini. Olives is one choice. Take three olives and put them onto a toothpick and place into the martini. The second choice is a lemon twist. Take the twist and rub it around the rim of the glass then twist it and place into the glass.
