Picasa Web Albums is a typical Google product: it looks spartan, but contains more features than you at first glance would suggest.

To get all the confusion to help the world: there is the program Picasa and there is a site Picasa . Both belong to the Google stable and are thus related. The program is especially designed to images from a camera to import and manage your photo collection and upload to Picasa Web Albums.

But the latter can also be used without the program through photos manually via the browser to upload, or through a program like Adobe Lightroom or Apple Aperture.

Obviously, you can organize photos into albums and share them with specific email addresses. Conveniently, afterwards you can block access to an album for a specific person. Also useful: everyone who has access to an album gets an email later if additional images are added.

Pros and Cons
For enthusiasts Picasa has some advantages. To start the service keeps a version delivered in high resolution, which you can download. Also on the website you can zoom in on the original file. It is further useful to you each photograph the entire EXIF information retrieval.

The biggest drawbacks to Picasa are the cumbersome operation and far from perfect interface. For example if you multiple photos from an album to download you should always do frame by frame. Users of Android phones than have the advantage that all pictures in the gallery automatically from their smartphone or tablet appearance.

Picasa is free with 1 GB of storage. For 5 dollars per year jack you up to 20 GB, while $ 256 per year is good for 1 TB (yes, a terabyte) of storage. But watch out: these shares Picasaweb storage with Gmail and Google Docs.
