A look at how even someone on a very low budget can fill their garden with large and healthy plants.

How to multiply the plants in your garden without spending money

With a several month summer break from university, no summer job, and a tendency to get bored very quickly, I decided to venture into the garden to find something constructive to do. Another thing to know about me is that I have a great interest in nature, and as much idea of turning my (very large) garden into a photosynthesising powerhouse, being a student doesn’t exactly allow me to spend the precious money I have on plants to put around the garden.
So I did some research and found a lot of information about taking cuttings from plants and in effect cloning them with the use of root hormone. So I decided to go out and buy some cheap organic root hormone (only about £3.50) and I got to work in the garden taking hundreds of small cuttings from various plants and putting some in places around the garden, some in a propagator with a plastic lid and some sprigs of rosemary I simply places into a jar of water without root hormone.
So everything was set up and I was eagerly waiting for my new plants to grow, if I had the time in between doing other things I would check the cuttings daily to make sure that none had died off, removing the dead cuttings to avoid the spread of bacteria.
Just over a month later I came back to my cuttings to see if there had been any root growth. Many of the plants had not yet rooted, so I left these in the propagator. The rosemary on the other hand was an almost all round success story. The cuttings in water had created plenty of roots, same with the rosemary in the propagator; unfortunately many of the cuttings that I had just placed into the ground and watered often had not yet rooted.
So that was how I spent my early summer, in amongst a bit of volunteer work and a minimal amount of studying, I was on my way to creating a great plant filled garden for next year, without spending too much money at all!
