How to preserve fish

There are several ways in which you can preserve fish, you just have to know how to do it and which method is easier for you.

You can preserve fish in the following ways, freezing, canning, smoking and pickling. In this article we shall outline one the easiest methods of preserving fish which is freezing.

Step 1

Wash the fish thoroughly under running water and remove all the dirt, remove the entrails as well. Cut the fish into large thin strips ready for freezing.

Step 2

Place the stripped fish in a clean plastic container while you prepare the materials for freezing the fish. When wrapping the fish make sure that you pack it in an airtight manner in order to prevent freezer burn. This will also reduce in any changes caused by unwanted flavors from other frozen foods in your freezer.

Step 3

Tightly wrap the fish leaving no parts of the fish exposed to air, you can use cling film for wrapping the fish use as much film as possible just to make sure that the fish is completely wrapped.

Step 4

Place the wrapped fish into another plastic bag that seals tightly such as a zip lock bag. Once you are done now your fish is ready for freezing.

Step 5

The freezer temperature should be below 0 degrees Fahrenheit. It is also important to make sure that the freezer is cleaned well prior to freezing your fish to avoid any contamination from foods and fluids that might have spilled in the freezer.

Step 6

Write down on a small sticky pad the date when you put the fish for freezing and stick the paper onto your fridge. It is always good to know when the fish will no longer be safe to eat.

Different types of fish have varying life spans for example the Northern Pike,Smelt and the Lake Trout can be frozen for a period of between 4-6 months. There are type of fish that can be frozen for a period of 7-9 months such as the Bass, Bluegills among others. You should also use your judgement to determine how long you want to freeze your fish.
