Travelling by car is safe, but there are steps that you can take to make sure that you keep as safe as possible when you are driving or parking your car!

Cars are safe!

Cars are a fairly safe means of transport as long as you have regard to a few safety precautions.
If you don't know where you are going, check out the route, don't rely on your satellite navigation system as they have been known to be wrong.Whilst planning your route check out the weather conditions- will it be sunny or will the sky turn black and the road become flooded.

Safe when driving

Mobile phones are good to have when you are out and about but don't use it when you are driving, unless you have a hand held mechanism. If you don't have a mobile phone make sure that you have change or a phone card for a public phone. Valuables should be placed out of sight, best locked in the boot. If you are driving slowly, perhaps in a queue of traffic, keep all of your doors locked and the windows closed as far as possible to avoid attack by the sneak thief.
The best safety procedure to follow is not to pick up hitch hikers- you might be helping a really nice person but you could end up spending the journey with a very boring person or worse than that, a potential attacker.

Parking Safely

Once you have reached your destination there are a number of strategies to take when you park your car. It is best to park in a well lit place, close to where you need to be, with lots of people walking by. If you reverse into a parking place it will be quicker and easier to get out and this also applies if you are parking in a cul-de-sac , allways park facing outwards towards the main road.
If you are parking in a multi storey car park try and park on a lower floor near the staircase or ramp where people are walking. Just remember that it might be light when you park your car , but especially in winter, it can get dark very early in the day. If there is a manned booth in the car park try and park as near to it as possible as criminals do not tend to operate near where people are working.
If you are in a car park there are a few security tips to take before you get your parking ticket. Lock all the doors, check that the sunroof and windows are shut and that the boot is locked. Make sure all your valuables are locked in the boot before you go and get your parking ticket!

Returning to the car

When you get back to the car park have your keys in your hand so you can get into your car quickly if you need to do it. Before you get into the car have a quick look in the car to make sure that it is in the same condition as you left it. Don't leave your bags on the roof of the car whilst you unlock it as motorists have been known to drive off with their shopping on the roof of the car.

Above all, drive carefully, lock your car and avoid lonely locations.
