My experience of an Idle No More Global Action event in my home town Victoria BC Canada.

Oct 7 Proclaim

Yesterday my friend and I attended an Idle No More event in Victoria B.C. ( my home town) part of a global action event which focused on the Royal Proclamation of 1763 as a way of bringing attention to the still unfulfilled promises with regard to indigenous sovereignty, treaties, and protection of land water and air.

On our way to the event an elderly woman stopped us and warned us not to go down there( the legislature building) as the Indians were creating another disturbance, beating their drums etc. We tried to tell her that we should support them because it is also our land, air and water that is threatened ,but she was having none of it.

Some Other Opinions

Others we spoke to thought the message of the speakers was being diluted by putting too much emphasis on the missing and murdered aboriginal women, treaty rights and housing standards. What they don't realize is that the way women and the poor are treated is a direct reflection of the way mother earth is treated. They can not be separated. The treatment of mother earth is a symptom of how the feminine qualities of the heart: love and nurture are held in contempt by a patriarchal society dominated by multinational companies whose only regard is for the bottom line.

Some Suggestions

Next time I would suggest to the speakers that they make these connections for their listeners, explain how their own indigenous concerns are linked to the concerns of the general population, so that they draw more people to support their cause. Although it may be obvious to them that their rights to the land are intertwined with our right to a clean environment,it might not be so obvious to the general population. Their speakers could point out that when women irregardless of race are treated without respect the mother earth is also in danger. The general population may need to be helped to see that one is a reflection of the other.

Discouragement but also Hope

Over all, though the turnout was disappointing ( about 100), it was heartening to see so many supporters were young and white. And it was also encouraging to know that these events were taking place at the same time around the globe. many with much larger turnouts.
Below is a list of some of the events held yesterday and some contact information.

You are right, we need to support them, not fight any more. They were not treated well and in some areas are still not treated fairly.

Time for deep reflection and awareness that greed and selfishness stand in the way of the common citizens to realize their dream of a life of fulfillment and meaning. The resources of planet earth have taken billions of years to come to the present state and we are holding them in trust as co-creators to add value. Thanks C D Moore - let us wake up before it is too late - siva
