This article will attempt to shed light on the meaning of Pluto's transits to planets and points in the horoscope of the United States during the past fifteen years - where it has brought us and where it is likely to take us.

Pluto in mythology and psychology

Pluto to the Romans, Hades to the Greeks, he is the great god of the underworld, lord of darkness, the bringer of death, destruction and annihilation.

Very briefly, the story is as follows: One day Hades cast his eyes upon the young Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, and fell instantly in love with her. He confided his secret to his brother Zeus and asked for is help, so the two of them hatched a plan to trap her. As Persephone played in the fields with her friends, picking flowers, they caused the earth to split apart underneath her, whereupon she instantly fell into the underworld, where Hades made her his wife.

Now Demeter was not only Persephone's mother and Hades' sister, she was also the goddess of nature, and as we might expect she became vastly displeased with her daughter being kidnapped and taken into the depths of darkness - thus she begged Hades to allow her daughter to come back to the living, claiming that Persephone was not meant to live in the underworld. So Hades consulted with Zeus, and they decided to allow Persephone to live on earth for six months of each year, while the rest of the time she would reside in the underworld with Hades.

From a Jungian, psychological viewpoint, therefore, Pluto/Hades represents our dark side, and the myth suggests that we must acknowledge that side of ourselves and become friends with it, lest it erupt from the depths of our subconscious in very unhealthy ways. When C. G. Jung said "Unless an inner situation is made conscious, it will happen outside as fate," he was putting a psychological face upon the Pluto/Hades myth.

In astrology then, Pluto represents the process of death, destruction and annihilation, which is followed (ideally) by rebirth, regeneration and transformation (the Phoenix rising out of the ashes of its own destruction). Persephone dies each year (is taken into the underworld) and she is reborn back into the light of the living - a perfect symbol, then, of the Plutonian process or journey.

America's appointment with Pluto

At the very time of 9/11, Pluto moved onto the ascendant of the United States horoscope, coinciding, in this observer's opinion, with a descent into our collective dark side.

Reacting to the terrorist attacks upon our soil, the powers that be soon ginned up an unnecessary and costly war with Iraq based on a pack of lies, and as citizens we were told to "watch what you say and watch what you do." The USA Patriot Act, which stripped us of essential liberties, was passed overwhelmingly, mass surveillance of the American people reached into every personal computer and telephone, and permanent, endless war became the norm.

Suspected terrorists were whisked off to black box sites where they were tortured, or incarcerated at Guantanimo where many still reside in isolation and solitary confinement, uncharged with any crime to this day.

Now, as Pluto transits over an opposition to the Sun in the U.S. horoscope, would be fascist dictators like Donald Trump magnetize millions of disaffected, angry citizens to their cause.

Pluto not only opposes America's Sun these days, but it is also forming a square or ninety degree angle to the nation's natal Saturn. In an individual's birth chart, Pluto squaring Saturn (which happens but once every 100 to 125 years), signals a time when the embedded structures of one's life crumble or are destroyed. It might coincide with a bankruptcy, when all of one's assets are wiped out. It might coincide with one's house burning down. Whatever the actual scenario, it signals a time of destruction, but also - hopefully - a time of rebirth, regeneration and transformation. In a nation's horoscope, such transits mark periods of darkness and despair, a rise of tyranny, and even fascism.

Oppositions in astrology always play out as events coming at us from 'out there.' Pluto in opposition to the Sun in our nation's horoscope brings terror at us from without as we meet our own collective dark side mirrored to us in the form of the 'other.'

From freedom to enslavement

America has historically been revered - deserved or not - as a beacon of hope to the rest of the world, but within the present century its Plutonian dark side has risen like the multi-headed hydra to engulf us all. Plutocrats on Wall Street and in the corporatocracy, having bought and paid for the vast majority of our politicians both Democrat and Republican, have appropriated the nation's wealth exclusively as their own. Cops shoot and kill unarmed young black men with impunity and get away with it. Xenophobic political candidates like DonaldTrump, Ben Carson and John Kasich call for mass surveillance of the Muslims in our midst. Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz tell us we should keep all people who aren't Christians out of our country. Just yesterday, November 23, 2015, fueled by this incendiary talk, white supremacists opened fire on a Black Lives Matter encampment in Minneapolis, wounding five people, and armed thugs have held anti-Muslim rallies in front of mosques.

The collapse of the empire

The American empire is in the throes of collapse, though most are as yet unaware of it. Pluto entered Capricorn - the sign which rules the established order, the system, business as usual - the status-quo - in early 2008, coinciding with our economic meltdown and the bailout of Wall Street. Pluto's entrance into the sign of the mountain goat signals nothing less than system (Capricorn) collapse (Pluto).

A great rift between two opposing world views now splits us asunder, while the United States responds to events by making one futile and destructive move after another. Chris Hedges, America's foremost social critic, wrote this week in www.truthdig.org a brilliant analysis of where we are headed as a nation: "Another jihadi terrorist attack in the United States will extinguish what remains of our anemic and largely dysfunctional democracy. Fear will be even more fervently stoked and manipulated by the state. The remnants of our civil liberties will be abolished. Groups that defy the corporate state - Black Lives Matter, climate change activists and anti-capitalists - will be ruthlessly targeted for elimination as the nation is swept into the Manichean world of us-and-them, traitors versus patriots. Culture will be reduced to sentimental doggerel and patriotic kitsch. Violence will be sanctified, in Hollywood and the media, as a purifying agent. Any criticism of the crusade or of those leading it will be heresy. The police and the military will be deified. Nationalism, which at its core is about self-exaltation and racism, will distort our perception of reality. We will gather like frightened children around the flag. We will sing the national anthem in unison. We will kneel before the state and the organs of internal security. We will beg our masters to save us. We will be paralyzed by the psychosis of permanent war."

"In wartime, public discourse emits the insane mutterings of King Lear: 'Then, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill!' Demagogues bellow for more bombs and more enemy corpses. The military and the war profiteers provide them. The public cheers on the slaughter. Victory is assured. The nation rejoices when the newest face of evil is eradicated. But when one face of evil - Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi or Abdelhamid Abaaoud - is exterminated, another swiftly rises to take his place. It is an endless and futile quest."

"Violence generates counterviolence. The cycle does not stop until the killing stops. All that makes us human - love, empathy, tenderness, kindness - is dismissed in wartime as useless and weak. We revel in a demented hypermasculinity. We lose the capacity to feel and understand. We pity only our own. We too celebrate our glorified martyrs. We endow our sanctified dead with the lofty virtues of goodness that define our national myth, ignoring our complicity in perpetuating the ceaseless cycle of death. Our drones and airstrikes, after all, have decapitated far more people, including children, than Islamic State."

So our self-destruction as a world super power and an empire, in this observer's opinion, must play out in full. It is only after we have fallen, like poor Persephone, into the bowels of the hell of our own making, that we will be able to finally see the folly of giving in to our darkest impulses and climb out of that darkness back into the light.

From the astrological perspective, it does not seem that will happen until Pluto moves out of Capricorn and into Aquarius in the year 2024.

Robert Hand in "Planets in Transit" writes this about Pluto Opposition Sun: "This can be an extremely difficult period for relationships, both intimate and casual, because you are likely to get involved in power struggles with others. It may be that you will try to force others to take a certain course of action against their will, or that others may try to do this for you. In either case you may have to take evasive actions in order to avoid real difficulties. If you are attempting to dominate others, you should stop, no matter what your motives are. You may think you have the best reasons in the world for dominating people, and perhaps you believe that you are only doing it for their own good, but that is probably not really true. It is more likely that you simply cannot leave well enough alone. An excessive desire to meddle and interfere is one of the negative effects of this transit."

"An excessive desire to meddle" is certainly on the mark. Thanks for commenting Christopher.

America has always harboured a certain number of "crazies" - be they white supremacists, Black Panthers or whatever. However, it seems that they have always been restricted to the lunatic fringe. It is when the lunatics take over the whole asylum that the real problems begin, and it is up to the electorate next year to make sure that that doesn't happen. But will they realise that?

Given Pluto's current transits, along with the fact that Saturn will cross the ascendant of America's horoscope next year, I would guess the inmates are going to take over the asylum, and that will be true whether a Republican or Hillary Clinton wins.

(I have to say John that I take exception to your characterization of Black Panthers as crazies.)

A very scholarly exposition based on astrology. People like me and others have always looked up to America as an example, but after WWII the slide began starting with the dropping of the A bombs and incessant and pointless wars in Asia and Middle East. The leadership which the world expected from America went missing as small men sat as presidents.
Most great empires implode from inside and there is a real possibility of this happening now. Anyway whatever is to happen will happen for as the Lord Krishna says " not a leaf moves without my will"

The dropping of the A-bomb, a Pluto phenomenon of the first order, caused J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the inventors of the bomb, to intone a quote from the Gita: "Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds."

Great observation Madan. Thank you.

Thanks Steve for a thought provoking post.

America seems to hover over the brink with even ordinary people losing hope that peace is possible without wars.

The root cause of the issue, borne out of greed and ego, is the proliferation of weapons of increasing potency. When we refuse to give up on that which has created all the misery then we have no choice but to learn the harsh truth through more painful lessons.

Despite all the reverses starting from Vietnam war America still has a tendency to persist with an approach that is doomed to fail. They will surely eat the humble pie after more bitter reverses.

Real wisdom lies in facing the common enemy of 99% and that is by coordinating a joint effort under the auspices of the UN. That is no defeat at all - just doing what is right by the people.

The negative side to our emotions are easily kindled and can run riot but the reality will assert in the end. Many hydrogen bombs will not kill what is deep within. The horrors will haunt us forever.

America got away with the dropping of Atom bombs. Now we have better ways to solve the issues but our leaders should stop being politicians and used by a wily few - siva

The stars do have some influence on events on earth and therefore also part of your life and my life. However, US will always remain a strong nation unless the White House allows mad soldiers to mess up the country. For the US to be defeated, it must first starts to attack another country. We hope such a day will never happen and thus US will be safe forever. If you think you can contribute, why not do your place to be in the White House?

Steve, very interesting point but it truly up to the person how they see things. Yes, the planets do influence but we don't have to follow that is our choice.

The collective psyche of the leaders of America fell into the dark side after 9/11, and there has been no emergence from that, as far as I can see.
