Is there a Right Attitude?

We are born with an awareness of the right attitude to survive and even to play meaningfully our part as co-creators. Change is the only constant but we all can influence the change to goad humanity towards the right path with the right attitude - time for deep reflection as we seem to run out of time for course correction.

Variety at a Price

Variety is the spice of life and that says much about life on this planet. I do hope we have that in after life too if that does exist! We have all types here and as is said famously – it takes all kinds to make a world. Just like we come with different thumbprints we also have varied attitudes. Our world is an amalgam of all sorts that have to share our space and within a family too. Maybe, our Creator is having the fun of his life seeing us at wit’s end to keep out of harm’s way from one another! We are aware of unmarked boundaries that we take care not to cross! And that exists even amid the most loving of families. Live and let live decides our destiny especially with more and more powerful weapons to destroy others – what they are for anyway!

The Good and the Bad

We try to find common ground despite needling others to test their resolve. Ego and hubris blind reasoned action and soon we are playing brinkmanship but, thankfully, wiser counsels prevail. We come inborn with an awareness of the right attitude; what better way to put it than – do unto others as you would have them do unto you. In my life I have found – give more than take has served me well. It gives me immense satisfaction and fulfillment, and also attracts the right people around me or rather it proves a repellent for those with the wrong attitude! Everyone has an attitude and for few it is cast in stone and they are ready to pay any price! What is right attitude for me may not be for another and the majority are taken advantage of by those dictating their terms. Soon those with the accommodating attitude are forced to rethink their position. The good group together to assert and has prevailed so far. However, intolerance has been our bane right through history.

Shifting Sands

What is a right attitude anyway especially in an ever changing world? Though basics remain the same we have to be aware of shifting sands to survive. We need our own space to be comfortable be they as individual, family, country, faith, cultural identity, etc. In a modern world, with blurring identity, some take it as a challenge even an assault on their lifestyle. Existing family and societal norms get unraveled especially in terms of gender equality. Women are more assertive now and that puts some social setup under strain. Within traditional families the old order comes apart. Most adjust for survival’s sake while others see such changes as a threat and become disoriented.

Rock and a Hard Place

Can there be a universal right attitude as a step towards peace? Can we shake off the vestiges of a past that have proved unfair? Can we crystallize wisdom divined from history so that we exist in peace? I feel the headlines that grab our attention, more for the wrong reasons, are due to a minority unable to come to terms with change in the attitude of younger generation. They want the existing order but also modern conveniences. They are caught between a rock of unbendable faith and a hard place of incessant change.

Inclusive Society

When we realize we are mere passengers and have to go with the flow we will be more at peace. That does not mean those with the verve cannot find their own path and even highlight it as the one for others to follow, following the dictum - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Lifestyle will be ever changing but we can still find meaning if we want to. Flailing our arms wildly to make a statement shows only bankruptcy of ideas to expose us and our misplaced and untenable cause. Rather understand why others behave the way they do but sticking to our guns (never fire wildly!) will more make a right statement with the right attitude. Our lifestyles are always a work in progress and we all have a part to chart the course we take. Our individual contribution will always matter provided we have faith in ourselves. We may lose many a battle but win the war – without weapons of destruction of course. If the latter is resorted to then we have the wrong attitude leading to a life of misery. Hopefully, leaders with right attitude will emerge than those who saber rattle to remain in the limelight. The majority will take like a fish to water for those who expound an inclusive path. A true leader finds strength in uniting people though many cling to power by dividing them!

You ask a good question here, siva.

Is there a universally right attitude, or do we need to form our own attitude based on love and if we all do so, would the ensuing attitude be the same, or similar then too?

“Attitude is a direction of love, loving. When you do not love, you have the wrong direction in attitude leading you away from love, when you love, you will always have the right attitude then.”

That’s my answer to your question.

Thank you Spirited for your thoughts. I just posted my comment on yours about countering intolerance with love and understanding. Love has to fight to stand its ground all the time - I just read Putin threatening to use nuclear weapons to defend Crimea! It is easier to destroy than build with the march of progress, it looks like.

Real progress is through taking an inclusive path and using diversity in creation as a plus point. Is a piece of land so important to destroy humanity and fellow travelers? Talk about being pushed beyond the brink, a tiger cornered! siva

I read somewhere power without love creates the tyrant, love without power creates a weakling.

Real love though is always powerful I believe.

Thanks Spirited. Maybe, leaders think that they have to flex their muscles and bully others to stay in the limelight all the time. One oozing love may not acquire political power which is the domain of opportunists and even tyrants.

Whatever the lessons from history, beliefs, they all prove skin deep. Maybe Putin is feeling needled, ridiculed and is the butt of western politics and the provocateurs themselves can well behave the same way if the push comes to shove. Nature is ever renewing, bending backwards, to accommodate our excesses and it can well reinvent itself the day after - without us, proving good riddance in the end! Time for love to assert - is it not contagious with ability to multiply geometrically but our inner demons seem to assert and set the agenda! Is love only for idealists? siva

The majority will should not be defeated and become subservient like it is happening most times. It is sad that even in democracies the boss remains same whoever is elected to power. There should be gradual transfer of wealth from rich to poor and not the other way.

Let us keep the conversation going, thanks Joyesh - siva

A good question Siva! Since the beginning we have tried to force our opinions on each other and very few have seen the folly of it all. As you say do unto others as you would have them do unto you is the closest anyone has come to the right attitude. The answer is not to be found in war but in love for each other. When we can look at another and see ourselves we will have made the ultimate leap. Blessings.

Thanks Kingwell. A child is advised about good behavior that is hardly seen practiced in adult life! We should take down hypocrisy at every level of life especially in politics. Wars are mostly due to greed and ego of leaders with the common citizens footing the bill both in terms of costs and lives lost. What for indeed when those who perish have same yearnings to lead peaceful lives. I am reminded of bloody cockfights (rooster) staged for the entertainment of onlookers!

Let us take down artificial barriers that prove liabilities for peaceful living. When we breathe love, hatred, ego and strife will disappear - siva

Unfortunately, some come to power promising to unite, who instead leave the people they said they would unite more divided than ever. Love respects differences and embraces the human spirit in each person. The power hungry want to fit everyone into the same mold and get rid of differences so as to make governing more easy on themselves. And the greedy exploit everyone they can. This, of course, is the opposite of a loving attitude, but that attitude must come from individual hearts and can't be created by someone else. But real love inspires love in return.

Thanks for an incisive comment, BarbRad. Many leaders cling to power through manipulating people and securing votes through "votebanks". Lee Kuan Yew, the one who molded Singapore, was one of a kind who was dead set on unity of people than on divide and rule. One can see his vision of development everywhere in Singapore. The best monument and legacy he left behind was a united country standing on firm pillars of unity and progress. Sadly, many leaders still don't get the basics right and leave behind divided nations, creating issues where there was none.

There is always right and wrong in all walks of life, but it's our attitude to either that makes us who we are and determines the choices we make, how we view and treat others is based on our individual attitudes, a universal attitude founded upon the outlook of treat others as you would have them treat you would indeed be a strong antidote to war, and bring harmony to our every day family lives.
Wonderfully written and illustrated as always Siva, thank you for yet another insightful share.

Happy to see you again on my pages Mariah. The world chugs along because most know and have the right attitude but our leaders try to divide us for their selfish goals. Maybe the right ones do not step in due to the cesspool of deceit and hypocrisy prevalent in politics.

I read about Putin threatening to use nuclear weapons to defend Crimea - talk about touching a raw nerve and how a tiger reacts when cornered! I was pondering how God Himself had second thoughts after creating us - sort of opening a can of worms on this beautiful planet! siva

Dear Siva, having the right attitude depends on us. We should realize that having an easy and cooperative nature towards everyone would help us to be flexible and humble. Therefore we should always give value to our relationships and make an effort to nurture them, rather than losing them on trivial matters. This is the way to having positive attitudes.

Thank you dear Subra for adding your wise and practical take on my post. The irony is the common citizens, why even children, know how to get along except those that matter, our supposed leaders. They conveniently forget that they have to impart quality to life and not waste their time for self-preservation and vote banks!

I get a feel world leaders want to remain in the limelight by needling others - and that is happening even now right from time immemorial. I sit back and wonder when leaders of super powers threaten to use nuclear power when they feel "humiliated". We need those without ego or wiling to swallow pride in one gulp for world peace. My take applies to supposed religious leaders too out to appease their Gods by killing "others"! siva

Yes Ptrikha. Leaders think they have to appear strong and it is easier by threatening other countries. I was reading Pakistan is among the fastest accumulators of nuclear weapons, but can they solve their basic issues of poverty, ignorance, health of the common folks through these nuclear weapons? They little realize the irony of embracing China who are communists and atheists.

A leader is one who can improve the lifestyle of the poorest of the poor. What is there to defend anyway and who is interested to invite misery by attacking a country steeped in anarchy - siva
