The number 48 wins the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship for the fifth year in a row!

NASCAR Sprint Cup title goes to Jimmie Johnson

Can you imagine the same NFL, NBA, or NHL team winning the championship five times in a row? That's what Jimmie Johnson just did, finishing second to win his fifth straight NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship. Last year he broke a record for most consecutive championships, beating Bobby Pearson's three straight championships. Now he set the bar even higher, making it a grand total of five straight.

Johnson's race team, Hendrick Motorsports, is the powerhouse team in NASCAR, having drivers such as Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and now they have beaten the record for most championships as well with 10. Hendrick Motorsports beat Petty Enterprises, with nine championships.

Jimmie Johnson started the season finale, the Ford 400 at Homestead Miami Speedway, second in points, 15 behind Denny Hamlin. Kevin Harvick was the only other title contender, with 46 points behind Hamlin in third. Johnson made the fewest mistakes and finished second, while Hamlin finished 14th, and Harvick finished third.

Carl Edwards won his second race in a row at Homestead. Johnson looks to next season now, as although he scored the most points this year compared to his previous championship seasons, it was his closest championship race. Hamlin will be more experienced and hungry for a Cup trophy of his own next year.
