Jodie - Another One Of My Special Cats But In A Different Way

Jodie Was A Special Cat As I Saved Him From My Abusive Partner To Come And Live In Paradise!

Mum's Home Was Paradise To Me And Jodie The Cat

In January 1990 I started a new job. I loved it as I could walk there in 7 minutes, and yes, I have timed it! The place in question is known locally as Layton Depot and many Council wagons would come and go throughout the day. It was far busier then than it is now, unfortunately.

I worked in the Highways Section and I used to pick up the post from OSD just across the way. A lady called Mandy would operate the switchboard over there. One day later on that year she showed me a photograph of her brother, Steve and asked me what I thought of him.

"Nice! I like the fact he's tall and I love those eyes!" is probably what I said, or something similar. Mandy told me that I should meet Steve but all I can remember is spending Christmas of that year practically all day, every day at their house, mostly in Steve's bedroom!

I thought it was all wonderful..the attention and moved out of Mum's as soon as I could. My brother's girlfriend was living there plus a baby so there was no room for me anyway. I couldn't stand it.

In total we lived in 5 flats spanning two years. In the 5th flat he walked in with a black and white kitten under his arm that he claims was from a pet shop. Steve lied a lot so Jodie (as I called him) could've been from anywhere. He was tiny so obviously not 8 weeks old, more like 5 or 6 but he did eat well. He couldn't go outside though as we lived above a shop, right next to two dangerous roads, slap bang in the middle of Town.

Steve was given the task of looking after Jodie whilst I was at work. I was still in Highways, but, obviously, not within walking distance, so I bought a bike and rode it there and back in all weathers. Steve worked (if you can call it that) in a video shop 2 doors up from the flat. He told me that Jodie was climbing up the curtains so he had to bring him into the video shop. The poor thing sat in a basket at the back all day. He was no better off there than in the flat. He was bored and wanted more attention. He also wanted to go outside. He would sniff the air whenever we (rarely) opened windows and this made me feel especially guilty.

I discovered many things about Steve in our two years together. He could manipulate people into doing things (usually parting with their cash) with his charm. He could lie as though it was a normal activity..and could also cheat behind my back.

A combination of all the above forced me to leave him. He didn't love me and I didn't love him. All I wanted to do was take Jodie in my arms (which I did) and have Dad come and bring us home. We tried doing this whilst Steve was still in the video shop at night but he discovered us loading stuff into the car boot, all of which was mine, including the TV, an item he was particularly fond of and the only thing he was about to miss, apparently. I told him that the landlord thought that I wasn't paying my rent but it was Steve not paying his half. He chose to tell one of his famous lies to cover his back. There's one thing I cannot stand and that's injustice! The landlord telling me that I was behind with the rent upset me a lot. What was happening was this; I was giving Steve my share, then he would pay the landlord, saying it was his half and that I couldn't pay. I mean, how ridiculous! I was the main earner and hardly ever saw Steve with money and if I did it was usually mine.

Anyway, we managed to get away, all the while Jodie writhing about in my arms. I didn't have a carrier for him so it is a miracle he got in the house without running off!

At that time Mum had Chloe and Thebes, two sisters. Chloe was the aggressive one of the two but she liked the outdoors so could let off steam. We couldn't hold Jodie indoors any longer and let him out, totally disregarding vets' advice to "keep them indoors for 6 weeks" or whatever it is. He'd been indoors already albeit in another location, I wasn't going to subject him to that again!

Jodie turned out to be a wonderful cat. He changed for the better when I moved back to Mum's house (my brother had bought a house by then) and Chloe and Thebes did have run-ins with him at times, but, as you can see by the photograph, they did like to snooze together!

Jodie was to be put down, aged 12, suffering from severe arthritis in his back legs. We tried everything but nothing worked. He would lean against walls in order to move anywhere so he wouldn't fall over. Absolutely heartbreaking. Maybe it was his long legs that were to blame, who knows? One thing's for sure, he lived a VERY full life. As for Steve, I've no idea where he is, nor do I care.

Currently I am unemployed so I have a lot of time on my hands. However, I feel I need to be on the internet, communicating with others, giving advice, making people laugh and, hopefully become well-respected on wikinut.

Thanks. Jodie was put down in 2005. Chloe's story had a sad ending, I shall write that one tomorrow. :-(

I was lucky she allowed ME back home as well, otherwise I'd be on the streets with my cat..not ideal. If I'd left him with Steve he'd have shoved him under the floorboards, I'm convinced of that. :-(

That's OK. Yes, Mum and Dad were very sympathetic, as it happens. They knew Steve wasn't right for me but never interfered, just let me find out for myself, so, when I finally left him, Jodie was my rock (as Flojo is my rock now) so my parents appreciated that fact. :-)

The fact he was only 12 too, it still hurts me to think about it. If he'd had no arthritis, he'd have lived a lot longer, I'm convinced..but at least he had a GREAT life, running along the cemetery wall to sit with his friend, silhouetted against the night sky. :-)
