Keep Your Cat Safe From Abusers

October 29, 2011 A man in England was caught on security tape swinging a live cat by its tail. Animal welfare groups and pet owners were outraged. Many ask "Why would anyone do such a thing to a harmless cat?".

What Happened?

In an incident captured on camera outside a pub in southeast England a 20-year-old man (who has since turned himself in) was seen to be swinging a cat around by its tail for more than 30 seconds. He was not the cat's owner.

Prior to this a lady in England was seen tossing a cat into a dumpster, she was later reported to be "the most hated person in Great Britain" as a result of her cruel actions.

What Other Abuses are Common?

My wife worked in animal rescue for years, known cases cat abuse were not common. If it did happen it was usually because people were mad at a cat for using their yard as a litter box. She (my wife) also notes that what often happened was for upset people to catch suspected cats and drive them to the other side of town, or out of town, and dump them. She notes this was illegal but did happen.

There have been cases where people have been found with dead cats (belonging to neighbors) in their freezer, buried in their yard, or cases where nearly everyone in the neighborhood has had their outdoor cats go missing, and a cat killer was suspected. In some cases cat torturers have been caught and charged with abuse.

My wife also warns that sometimes cats are taken to be used as bait animals in the cruel world of dog fighting. This (and cats that are taken and used as food which also happens) is not the same as the abusive acts I am mostly writing about; as we shall see below.

Why Do People Hate, and Abuse Cats?

The problem is if a cat owner lets their cat out, even when it is legal to do so, and the cat leaves their property it can become a pest to a neighbor. Cats that use the world as their litter box may soon become hated by non-cat owners. Some cats, mostly males that are not neutered, take to spraying urine. Even my own car tires are sometimes sprayed with cat urine from my own cats who are neutered!

People might get upset at a cat that sprays on their house or car, or poops in their garden. They take their anger out on the cat, rather than dealing with the owner that put the cat in the situation!

By no means is anger at a cat an excuse to swing, torture, or kill, a cat, but I only to point out a reason why these kinds of cruelty might take place.

Keep Your Cat Safe!

All cat owners are advised to keep their cat where it is safe, in their home, or in their yard. Even if the law says your cat is free to roam, it does not prevent people from doing harm to your cat. You can still let your cat out if you want, just build it a cat enclosure to keep it safe and to prevent it from becoming enemy number one to non-pet lovers!

Good article with a very important message, I love all animals after all we are animals as well, and I can never understand why man abuse animals, I am not a cat owner but I find it hard to understand as an Englishman, why such a thing could happen in a country that suppose to be a country of animal lovers.

Any time a domesticated animal misbehaves, remember its the owner that's at fault, not the animal.

People who mistreat cats or every other animal (except sewer rats..lol) are a savage beast! I love animals and empathize with them.

Great star page, Mark.

wonderful article. I think people who abuse animals and others are 'sicko's' and can only take out their anger on someone or something smaller than they are. They are afraid to comfort anyone or anything their own size...

Shirley Ann Mandel, new to wikinut needs to read this. She loves her cat. She goes by Shirley Ann on wikinut. I don't want animals to suffer.

That is sad, cats are great pets and should be loved. People that abuse animals have some issues that need to be dealt with.

Although I don't have any cats, my parents used to have some. I would never harm any of these very loving creatures. A very good article that focuses on the inconsiderations that many have these days with animal welfare...

What a darn good idea Mark, to use a outdoor cat enclosure. We have folks around us that have cats and just let them roam and yes, they usually end up in my yard. Well, not for long though, Bugg loves to chase them. I doubt he would do a thing to them if he catches them but, what if he did. I would be beside myself with grief if he hurt one. My beloved Boo whom passed in 2009, just hated cats. He would kill them if he had a chance, I actually saw him and 2 other dogs do so once and it just mortified me and the child whom that cat belonged to and her friends. I was in the middle of all three dogs, swinging the broom around trying to get the dogs off the cat and when I finally did, it was too late. I have to admit, I was mad at my dog and his friends but even more so, I was angry at the owners of the cat. By the way, the cat was in my yard at the time. Dan and I ended up replacing their cat but, in all honesty, other than to just appease that sweet girl that saw her poor cat killed, Her parents were actually the ones that were to blame. Nice read. Thank you for sharing.:)

Yes so sad Denice if people let their cats out they must realize they are putting it in the way of danger.
Good of you to replace the cat, since it happened in your yard too

Great Star page Mark, and good advice about protecting your local moggy. As Johnny said, here in the UK, we are suppose to be animal lovers, and seeing what this guy did totally sickened me...

Thank you mark for such a powerful article. I an privileged to have had many cats in my life, including two that live with us today. I don't like the prospect of people being cruel to cats (or any other animal for that matter) but I am aware that it does happen.

I don't understand why some people abuse animals, especially cats. They are beautiful and mysterious creatures.
