One of the things that computer users wonder about is the need for cookies on their computer, this article gives them an explanation.

Know your computer

There are many times that a person may hear someone say, that you must delete your cookies or some other cookie related comment and many will wonder what exactly is a cookie. At its most basic, a cookie is a very little chunk of information, it is usually found on the internet at the site that you visited, so when you go their the site places this cookie on your computer. This information tells the website, and its administrator who visited and it tracks the user.

Overall, the cookie is a harmless piece of data and will cause no damage to your computer, however it is important to remember that over time you may end up with thousands of these cookies, so you may want to delete them on a regular basis. While these little chunks of information are not harmful, they may slow down your computer and make it run slower because you have so many of them, so keeping on track of clearing out your cookies will help to ensure that your computer is running properly.

For some people, not having cookies at all on their computer is desirable and it is doable. Your computer comes with a program called Internet Options which will allow you to disallow any and all cookies. The ability to disable these cookies are a matter of choice, as you simply have to set your Internet Options and you will be able to restrict some of the cookies and allow smaller ones by simply setting your settings to medium.

In conclusion, if you want to speed up your computer and keep your computer free of tracking devices, the best thing to do is to clear your computer of cookies on a regular basis, however understand that these cookies are usually not harmful and will not hurt your computer, but if your computer is running slow then too many cookies could be the culprit.
