May I introduce myself. My name is Larry, and I am a black kitten aged 8 weeks. I may be just about to turn my life around, so read on to find out more

Larry's Lament

I may have only been living in this world for eight weeks, but I reckon I have had enough things happen to me, to last me a lifetime. Some of it's been scary, but it's definitely getting better, so allow me to share it with you, then you can decide if you think I am lucky or not, well I am a black cat, and I am supposed to be lucky, so I hope I can live up to it.

I can just about remember the beginning of my life, and it wasn't much fun. This cat kept attacking me,, she bit and scratched me, and I was very frightened of her. I heard a lady say that she was my mother, who had got pregnant so young, I had lots of brothers and sisters, but she was rejecting all of us, and all I could do to get comfort was to curl up with them, away from her sharp claws.

That lady also said she was so glad I was alive, apparently me and my brother arrived two days after all the others, an emergency caesarian, whatever that might be? My brother lived for three days, then he died, I was small, but a bit stronger, and I survived. I did wonder what I was surviving for?.

So what was going to happen to me?

Because our mother rejected us, we were all very close, and my favourite sis was Elsie. We curled up and slept together all the time. Then along came a lady with soft hands and kind eyes, and all of us were put into something called a van, and taken to a wooden place they called the RSPCA. To my surprise I liked it, we were something special you know, they called it hand reared, we had our own room, no cages for us. with toys, food and water, nice comfy chairs to lie on, and lovely ladies who picked us up and cuddled us at every available opportunity.

They spoke about the fact I was black, shaking their heads and saying it might be more difficult for me, whatever did they mean?. I always thought black cats were lucky, and I certainly was, I had my life against all the odds.

There was man too, he was very kind, and away from our mothers sharp claws we thrived and grew. I will never understand why our mother didn't love us, but as a family we all loved each other, and the bonds were very strong. I wasn't happy when I heard them talk about rehoming, which is apparently the same as adoption, why should I be rehomed, I had the life of old Riley here, and I didn't want it to change. Elsie and I just stuck together, we were going to be mates for ever.

We had visitors

When the visitors came I wasn't silly, I pretended to be asleep, there was no way I wanted to leave this palace, and my family. So they didn't notice me, they picked up my black and white brother, who was bolder and more feisty. Our lady was saying that we had to be rehomed in pairs, otherwise it wouldn't be fair, and it suddenly struck me, if all my siblings were going to be rehomed, I would be left on my own, and I didn't want that. This situation called for some quick action.

I pushed aside my feelings of shyness, and walked towards the man purring loudly. He was saying that maybe a black and white one would be ok, as he didn't want a completely black one. Well I wasn't gonna stand for that, so I walked right up to him, past my brother, then I did something really brave, I curled up round his neck.

Elsie got the vibes too. My sis is a clever girl, she swished past him, tantalising him with the end of her tail, and he was captivated, absolute putty in her hands. She was picked up by the lady that was with him, we both got cuddles and then they swopped us over, and we both made sure we cuddled them well. Suddenly the idea of living in a home with these two seemed very appealing.

Humans really are a pushover aren't they, it was that easy, so we said goodbye to my black and white brother, and my other sis, whose also a tabby. We are now at home with them, it's great, we tear about all over the place, play fight, and then we conk. The food is lovely, the cuddles are great, and we dutifully use our litter tray, they taught us that at the centre.

There is a dog, big, golden and stupid. He moves gently, and we don't think he will give us any trouble in the future. When we are older we can go in the garden, but right now we have everything we need in the house, and we love our new family. Now I don't really like the name Larry, and sis reckons only old ladies get called Elsie, our new family were discussing new names we might have. How did they know what we wanted?. I am going to be Max, and sis is going to be Mia, pretty swish eh, I think we are going to like it here.

That kitten is very lucky, lots do not get homes, especially black ones. Interesting that the shelter had a policy of adopting kittens in pairs.

They are all our fellow travelers enriching our lives. Great to know their feelings more intimately Carol but I think they do have similar feelings as so beautifully told by you - siva
