Laugh with Leo

I am Leo, a golden haired retriever, until recently the only pet in my house, but suddenly it all changed. Read on to find out more.

Laugh with Leo

My name is Leo, my family call me Leo the lion because I was born in August, certainly not for any other reason. I am quite shy with other dogs, mainly because when I was a young pup, being the smallest of the litter, when the food bowl arrived, I was pushed out of the way.

When Carol came to choose a puppy, I made sure she chose me by falling asleep on her lap. I felt warm and safe with her, and was overjoyed when she chose me out of my nine brothers and sisters.

Charley was already there

There was another pet when I arrived, Charley the cat, who lived to twenty one, and died in 2009. I had great respect for her, and we always got on fine. I don't mind cats at all, in fact I prefer them to other dogs, who always come racing up to me, and either want to get on my back and dominate me, or else sniff me in places I won't mention.

I am a placid guy, who just enjoys a peaceful life, some people might say I am a wimp or a coward, but who wants to go tearing around being pursued by another dog when I can have a good rummage round, and walk around at my own pace?

My toys

When I was a puppy, every time I went out, I used to find a new toy and bring it home with me. Although I am now Nine, I still do it. I hear my owners say I have never grown up, they still call me pup, so I have to live up to my name.

My life has always been good, walks by the sea, nice food and lots of love. I give lots of love back, and I love to stand right beside Keith, so he forgets I am there, whilst he tweaks my ears.

I did miss Charley when she died, I used to go out and check there were no nasty big bully cats around when she wanted to go out in the garden, but then I got used to being the only pet.

Until the end of 2013

Carol kept asking Keith if we would have another cat, and his reply was that they were too busy at the moment. But one day, Carol put her foot down. It was Keith's birthday, and she said it was about time they rescued a kitten, as they were always going to be busy, and it was no excuse.

You can imagine my surprise when they came back from the RSPCA with two kittens, a black one called Max, and a beautiful tabby girl called Mia. Right from that moment I loved our kittens, they were small and helpless, and me being a big bloke, I could make sure they were safe.

Mia gave a hiss when she first saw me, but I ignored that, and it never happened again. She recognised that I might be big, but that didn't mean I would hurt her, to be honest I don't have it in me to hurt anyone, but don't tell the burglars that, because when I am the other side of a door, I sound like a very hungry Alsatian. In the beginning, I used to hear them when they woke at six, and it felt like my duty to wake up Keith and Carol, but they were not greatly impressed, so nowadays I don't bother, they play in the kitchen, and I sleep on.

Mia loves to roll over and nestle in my fur, and I let her, it's nice to know she trusts me. Max is always on the go, he is not openly affectionate, but when he comes in, he always jumps at me and greets me with a kiss. Keith and Carol think that is lovely, and I suppose it means he likes me, so I let him do it.

I am a perfect gentleman when the door is open, and I let them pass through first. We all share a spot by the fire, and we all climb onto laps and get cuddled. I know I am a big boy, and occupy a lot of space when I am up there, but if it's good enough for our cats, then it's good enough for me.

Carol and Keith think I do it because I am jealous. I am not sure what that word means, but all I know is we are all loved, and I could not imagine life without Max and Mia, our lovely cats.

I loved this as it reminds me of my little ones. We have a cat by the name of Fat Boy who is 22 going on 23. He and our dearly departed black lab Norda used to love to sleep together and even eat together...How softly they touch our lives...Lovely article.

Oh Denise, how lovely to make contact again. We always had our mutual love of dogs in common. Give Bugg a hug from me. As you can see our animal family has increased.

I see and I am so happy for all of you. Oh Bugg appreciates that hug. Bugg is not very happy at this time. We are in a extended stay hotel until our new home is ready. He is used to having a huge yard and is now down to no yard but, in Bugg fashion, he is making new friends and dealing with our circumstances the best he can. I really am so blessed to have him. I will reach out to you when we get settled. You are a dear, bless you. Big hug to Leo and his two new friends:)
