Leadership, and the Good Leader

Leadership is touted to be a good thing within business, politics, and most other areas of life too.

What is good leadership all about though, and just what are the qualities of a good leader?

This article will try to answer these two questions, from a perspective that involves the individual person being their real selves. Only by being your true self, by being true to your real self, can you truly lead others.

Does a leader need to carry a large gun to be able to lead well? Do they need power to lead?

Does a true leader ever need power over others in any way, at all, in order to lead, and to be a good leader?

What then makes a good leader, a good one?

"Becoming a leader is synonymous with becoming yourself. It is precisely that simple, and it is also that difficult."

The above quote is one from Warren Bennis, an author, and a leadership expert.

Warren is a distinguished professor and founding chairman of the Leadership Institute at the University of Southern California. He is well known around the world as the preeminent expert on the subject of leadership.

This quote got me to thinking about leadership, and how it works for us, in each one of our lives.

Does his quote mean then, that when we are our real selves, we are naturally leaders of ourselves, and of others too, or are his words just applying to ourselves?

If so, it would mean too, that if others are also being their real selves, they can also lead themselves through their own lives, as well.

Leaders are a breed apart from followers.

Our ego, and our mind are followers, but our soul, or our higher self, or our real self, call it any one of these terms, is a natural leader.

A leader as this quote infers is someone who both follows themselves and are themselves.

This may seem paradoxical to you at first, but a leader follows themselves to lead, and they lead by being themselves, which could be said to be allowing themselves to lead themselves.

They are being their real self. This higher self leads and guides our body and mind, as well as our ego. This includes the conscious and the subconscious minds, together with even the physical body and emotional bodies as well.

To lead is to be a leader of all parts of your own self. This means to not control these lower bodies, but to inspire them to follow your higher self's passionate path and journey, and to help you as you go along on it, because they are a part of it too.

No one part of you can travel it alone.

Our higher self is always leading and guiding us whilst we are on our life journey.

It's just that we are not aware of this sometimes, especially when our ego is uppermost in our life, and then we often think that we are true leaders of men, but we are never in fact then being true leaders of ourselves.

The only true leader is the leader that is being their true self, their real self.

The love that comes from leading others by showing them that they too can be real leaders is the connection of love that inspires us even further to lead, and to love, and to keep on going on our path being our true selves too.

Leadership is not really about leading though, as much as it is about perfection.

Perfection is about you being the best you that you can be right now, and when you do this, you are the also leading yourself forward always too.

To lead others, it is usually best to try to be your best self also, and the most important factor in all of this, is to allow them, or to encourage them, the ones that you are leading, to be their best self, as well.

When they are all doing their best for you, that is the best form of leadership, and that is all we could ever ask for from leading others, and from being a good leader.

Everyone just doing their best, leading themselves, because you have led them to be their real self, by your example, of you being always your real self.

You need to be leading yourself first, before you can ever be truly leading others

Leaders can create openings within the fabric of another person, which has previously been covered over my their own personal objectives, and ego wants.

These persons are often complacent, even lazy to put in the effort to be their real self.

Some do not even know, or believe that they have this higher self available to them.

These people can be stimulated into action when a true leader appeals to their heart, drawing their real selves closer to them then.

This can reattach their motivation to be again linked to the prime cause, or to the real purpose, of their own lives.

This will get them going, whereas before they have just so often just sat idly around, waiting for this part of them to contact them, that is if they even believe in its existence for them, and to take leadership of them, for itself.

This does not usually happen for a person though, by itself, because nothing happens by itself!!

A person's real self has often to be coaxed out of them then.

This usually is needed to be done by a good leader, because we do not often realise ourselves, that it is probably being right now covered over with our ego, and with our subconscious leanings, and other reactive programmings.

We need to get past the foot soldiers, the followers, find the true leader in ourselves, and allow it to lead us forwards towards our goals, in our own lives.

When we do this, we will inspire others to do the same. This then is what true leadership is really all about.

"Leadership is unlocking people's potential to become better."

The American politician, and former U.S. Senator, Bill Bradley said this. Politicians do not usually get it right in their making of these types of statements, but I believe he is right in what he has said here!

Hello dear spirited ...so good to see you our pages again .
As you may have guessed by now ... I follow the best Leader there has and will ever be ...of course it is the LORD .
He tells us , that if a man wants to be a leader , then he must be the servant of all ... one who is willing to wash the feet of those who follow him , as He did Hid disciples before He went to the cross .
God bless you today my friend ...with His love and peace

Thanks Stella, I did have a bit of a break, I lost a bit of my incentive to write.

Thanks for the blessings, yes, the Lord is the true leader of us all, that is if we will allow him to lead us, as we follow him into Heaven.

Leadership is a complicated subject difficult to decipher. Your essay although interesting is like an attempt to square the circle. Now in the context of Presidential elections few people think they are capable leaders and try to get confirmation from the populace. Finally one emerges as a leader. How good a leader is difficult to assess. Some of us may have better leadership qualities but don't have the wherewithal to go through the year long ordeal.

thanks GV Rama Rao.

Most leaders then are circular people, flexible on their corners, whereas if a square person tries to square their circle when they are not a real leader, they will just turn us off with their false grasp of leadership.

Thought provoking as usual Spirited.

There are the spin doctors who create an aura to conceal the real person behind the mask of politicians.

Our leaders should be natural ones and speak what they mean and mean what they speak.

So I think we do not get the real leaders as they feel like a misfit even in democracies - siva

Your observation that leaders should be natural ones, siva, is interesting to me.

It leads me to ask if leaders are born, or made.

Can a person, born more a follower then, turn themselves into a leader then or not, do we need these leadership qualities in us naturally in our genes or karmic mix for this lifetime to be a real leader, or not?

In a lot of ways our mission, path, for this lifetime is planned, I think, and this includes whether you will be a leader or not in this lifetime, but then again, this quality of leadership is in all of us dormantly so, as we all have access to every good quality like this, just waiting to be turned on in us.

We can lead in smaller areas of life, without ever needing to lead in the larger fields of leadership too.

We can be a leader in our local football team, without ever leading a nation to war!

I feel leaders are born with the needed traits that others admire and then follow.

They need lots of energy, drive and passion. For those like me, It is not my cup of tea. I can set an example but cannot unite or lead warring groups.

People should be given broad benchmarks of behavior and encouraged to follow them rather than act like school headmaster, old style.

I am no leader as modern style leaders are in it for the power and position rather than serving people especially in nascent democracies including the biggest one by numbers, India. This is because politics is big business 24/7. No one really loses as those defeated create trouble, hog the limelight, and remain as leaders.

I know politicians in India who are almost hundred years old remaining as leaders, pulling the strings. Sadly, they spread hatred than unite people till their last breath. They are master puppeteers than real leaders - siva

Thanks for your lengthy and thoughtful reply siva.

I agree with all that you have said, a leader should not pull our strings to get us to follow him. They should more show us how to pull our own strings, if that is what is required, or show us how to be our real self, by inspiring us to do this..

One hundred year old politicians!!?

Perhaps it could only happen in India...
