Learn to Appreciate

It’s a lesson learned from my tortoise, that fruit coming by effort tastes sweeter. A little bit more appreciation makes the world a better place!

Another View of Appreciation

Walking into my house, your attention likely will soon be fixed on our little Nana, a tortoise, which has been our companion for years, and become a great touch-up to our room decoration since his presence. Apparently, my motto, Confucius’ Great Learning spirit, applies itself to the Nana-and-me time, for I need to learn how to take care of him often. I learned the necessity to provide Nana a spacious and clean den, to ensure a warm temperature and offer different foods to keep him comfortable and healthy. Recently, I learned the significance of appreciation from my little reptile friend.

Our Nana always has a good appetite, but with a not-so-nice dining habit in my eye. In meal time, I used to scatter his food with adequate amount in water where he could effortless reach. Then, I noticed he normally just took a bite on each grain of food leaving the rest untouched and wasted. Surrounded by meal of all kinds in his diet, he would raise his head up as if to ask for more. This habit drastically changed after I started putting his treats on a dry spot where he needs to not-so-easily climb to get. Now, he ALWAYS licks his plate clean!

It’s true we, human creatures, don’t really appreciate what we have unless effort is made a lot of times, so do creatures in other species. We need to be reminded to appreciate what we have in life, the things we tend to take for granted for they are not hard to get. Looking at Nana, who slowly dozed off again, I see a calm face as if to tell his content mind. Yes, a lesson of philosophy is learned, and it’s from my little reptile buddy!
