Leo needs tender Loving Care

Leo my dog is a fluffy six year old golden retriever He will never grow up, such is his breed, and apart from eating, his favourite occupation is cuddling. He is like a golden fluffy bear, he can melt the coldest heart with one pleading look from his limpid brown eyes, and he knows it. Sometimes it’s difficult to be stern when he is naughty, he is such a heartbreaker, but when there is something wrong with him, he really milks it, and because we love him so much, we always give him the benefit of the doubt.

A couple of weeks ago, Keith brought him back from his walk covered in blood. After cleaning him up, it seemed that one of his claws was bleeding, it was painful, and he was hobbling, so we took him to the vet, who checked him over, and then assured us that he was in great physical health except for this troublesome nail which would heal up, and just to be on the safe side, he prescribed some antibiotics to give him as well.

He seemed to be ok

During the next week everything was fine, he started to enjoy his walks again, and he was not hobbling any more. It was a relief to us because we were going away for 3 days, and he was going into the local kennels, and we wanted to go knowing he was recovered. But he wasn’t, the very day before we were due to go, he came back from his walk covered in blood again, and it was too late to take him to the vet.

The lady at the kennel was very understanding, we figured if he rested in his pen there, when we came back, our first priority was to get him back to the vet. She was happy with that, but we went away full of guilt, and just hoping he would be ok whilst we were away.

As soon as we got back, we took him to the vet again, it wasn’t just a sore toe, he had broken the bone, and it hadn’t knitted back properly, so he needed an operation to correct it, lest every so often the same problem would keep re-occuring.

Tuesday was Operation Day

So on Tuesday morning , Leo went in for his operation. He must have thought he was hard done by, not only did we leave him in the kennels for 3 days, no sooner did we return, than he had to go to the vet for the day. When we went to pick him up his foot was bound in a thick red dressing, and we were dreading he might have to wear a collar, and wondering how he would cope with that. But the nurse said as he hadn’t fussed over his dressing there was no need.

We put him to bed in the kitchen last night, and shock, horror, when we came down this morning it looked like a murder had been committed ! There was the tangled remains of the bandage he had bitten off, and blood all over the floor, so once again we rang the vet.

The vet redressed his wound again and gave him another stitch, and Leo looked more fed up than ever. If only we could explain to a dog it’s for his own good. We were given the collar of course, but as he had so much stress already today, we sat and watched him all day, making sure he didn’t chew the bandage off again. It will be different tonight of course, he will have to wear the collar, I am dreading it, and it will probably give us all a bad night. All I can hope is that he doesn’t take too long to heal up, and then not only will Leo’s life go back to normal, but ours as well.

Get better soon Leo. xxx
