Today is National Cat Day, a time to celebrate our furry friends. This is also a good day to remember the cats in shelters and to adopt a new pet if you can.

Helping Cats Find Homes

Sammy the cat had a rough start in life. Some Humane Society employees found him living outside a house which had been foreclosed on. He was cold and hungry and glad to be rescued.
My husband, Joe, and I adopted Sammy last year after we lost one of our cats to an accident. See Missing Molly. Today, we celebrate Sammy, our other cat, Tara; and millions of other cats during National Cat Day.
National Cat Day was founded in 2005 as a way to celebrate cats and encourage people to adopt cats from shelters. Approximately 4 million cats enter shelters in the United States each year. As many as half of the cats who enter shelters are euthanized because they can't find homes, according to the official Website of National Cat Day.

The Benefits of Cats

Adopting a cat has many advantages for the cat owner. Cats provide companionship and love. Sammy enjoys sleeping at the end of our bed and serves as a foot warmer on cold nights. He's affectionate and often rubs up against our legs or nuzzles one of us.
Our other cat, Tara, is also an affectionate creature. Her favorite spot to rest is Joe's lap. She enjoys cuddling with Joe and sometimes with me. She's definitely Daddy's girl, though.
Just petting a cat can lower stress. They are funny animals who make us laugh with some of their antics. Cats remind us not to take ourselves too seriously and to stop and laugh once in a while.
Cats are easy to care for. You don't need to walk them every day like you do with dogs. They just need food, water, a clean litter box and some affection from you. You can leave them alone during the work day. Cats don't require constant time and attention from you. They have their own schedules of eating, playing, lounging, and napping.

Celebrate the Kitties

Give your cat an extra treat or an extra cuddle in honor of National Cat Day. Let them know how much they mean to you.
Encourage your friends and family to consider adopting a cat. They will gain a new friend and won't have to worry about cold feet this winter.

Fern, I could not agree more. I always get my pets from the shelters. Tara was a flood refugee but I think she counts as a rescue cat.

Great post! I love cats! Let's celebrate by adopting as many as we can afford to care for properly.

I have a hard enough time keeping up with the PEOPLE in my house to think about trying to care properly for a pet, but I respect and admire those who can share their home with fur-babies. Great post.

So glad to learn you're a cat person, too, Jerry. I encourage everybody to adopt pets. They give so much support to you every day.

Phyl, I totally understand. Fur babies take some work but they are well worth it.

Good evening, Connie. Thanks for an interesting and informative article. I've had cats forever. Latest is a rescued Russian Blue. My oldest lived to be 19; both the vet and I cried when he passed. ~Marilyn
