Let us Count the Blessings

When much has been served on a silver plate it is natural for us to expect more, lulled into a sense of complacency, but it serves a higher purpose when we reflect on the largesse we enjoy here which can prove just a dream when the reality of hereafter kicks in. Being grateful for the blessings can help us stay rooted to the right path and ensure a realistic journey hereafter.

Many are the Blessings

We can take a view that life we take for granted proves a suffering for some. However, upon reflection, we should realize the support systems in place to lead a comfortable life. Nature acts as the benevolent mother that nourishes us right through. Then we have society and, finally, family to fall back upon not forgetting the many kindred spirits at our beck and call in times of need. We should not overlook the basics already in place while in pursuit of scientific and material progress. Despite the negativity spread by few we have the vast majority taking a path towards the welfare of humanity and the general creative process. I recall the words of Robert Kennedy “Fear not the path of truth for the lack of people walking on it.” We are also blessed to be borne with an inner awareness to survive and with the wherewithal to overcome the onslaughts on our mind and body. We have history as our guide and also beliefs to fall back upon, seek refuge in. These are in place despite some being born in places of hostility mainly due to human intolerance even though nature bends backwards to nurture us everywhere – it never differentiates and its offerings are free from the life support of atmosphere to the luxury of ready-to-eat fruits and vegetables. Are we not abundantly blessed?

Lifestyle Trends and our Legacy

It is human nature to expect more though we do not know about this desire in other species but they seem to be happy with the very basics. They live day by day and look contented more than we are. They live close to nature and are survivors; in fact, most have been around for periods stretching beyond prehistoric humans. We are now at the top of the pecking order and little care about other species; we take them to be at our disposal – surviving on our largesse! In fact, we now kill our own for various reasons other than mere survival. We also take a view we should ascend to heaven even to be swooned upon there as the chosen ones! We do take much for granted and that things can only get better even as we forget the sacrifices of our own right through history. Their lives have benefited us in terms of providing for more than our needs. We cannot be sure whether our lifestyles will prove likewise – of course, we should discount the gadgets that we discard for better in terms of more cosmetic changes by the day!

Settling Dues - Karma

I recall an anecdote from the Second World War about a visit from the heavens as recalled by some South Pacific islanders. They saw aliens clearing the jungle and gigantic flying machines landing on hastily built airstrips. The locals were lavished with beer, whisky, Coco Cola that they had never even seen let alone tasted! When they got the hang of good life the war ended and with that their heavenly consumables though all were etched in memory with a fond hope of the largesse returning to them, but it all proved in vain! John from America never returned!

Will we be like the South pacific islanders with a onetime lifestyle we are left to recall with fond craving for a second chance? Where do we go from here? If we want better times we should change our focus. Hereafter could well prove one without society support, survival depending on the wits of individual efforts; in that case, we have to step up here and now! One can end it all here when the push comes to shove but it could well be a fixed term of hard grind hereafter! We do not see other species committing hara-kiri though we do. There can be no easy escape in the next avatar – an existence without support systems! We cannot visualize that scenario and even if it comes to materialize we may not remember our lifestyle here; so it proves ensuing karma for our soul. The only comforting thought is our forefathers have trodden that path already and have seen it all and even paid the price!

Awareness Soothes our Soul

Upon reflection I get a feel oftentimes that our life here could well be the heaven that we overlook. We should have sacrificed much to be born as humans with such variety to enjoy our days here. We do not even know who we really are – to quote the Bard “All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages.” We keep playing roles all the time varying from children to grandparents, friends, even enemies, relatives, fellow countrymen etc. What variety and with so much of kindred spirits to lend their shoulders to the wheel of our shared journey. Some get preoccupied with making money and obsessed with such a lifestyle but the majority knows how to mix things up to prove variety is the spice of life! We get carried away in our pursuits, even bemoan our misfortune, but most of them are imaginary as we are blessed in more ways than we care to admit. With nature as our ally, why worry; it works free for us too! We end up as mere consumers of the largesse all given free on a silver plate. We are born with a silver spoon in our mouth when we reflect on how blessed we are. We may not be lucky next time around if there is another opportunity given or forced on us to repay our dues for our excesses here. Let us pause and count our blessings and change course towards a sustainable and more grateful lifestyle. As for me, such awareness soothes my heart, mind and soul and helps to rededicate my life and feel blessed to be part of this creative juggernaut.

As always, good to read your unique comment Snerfu. What we take as ours belonged to someone else and will soon pass on to others too. Yes Snerfu, it could well be all over again, to start from the very basics - no let up. Soul is not born, never dies - is one thought - we had it boy, better for course correction and back to reality check! Why worry about things we have no control of but let us do what is right and that none need tell us! Thanks again - siva

Thanks for another splendid article ~ Siva. I've been distracted by various other situations and have become far behind in my wikinut reading and writing.

My take away from your post is this:
"If we want better times we should change our focus." *** "We get carried away in our pursuits, even bemoan our misfortune, but most of them are imaginary as we are blessed in more ways than we care to admit." *** YES. May God bless you richly!

So happy to see you again Helen, and to read your motivating comments. I look forward to reading yours soon.

Living the moments, inspired through mindful meditation, helps us to keep out the negativity. For me, I just live through the moments by adding value wherever I can and feel blessed thereby.

It is indeed a shame if we do not leave behind primordial negative instincts when we have so much of support systems in society now. My highlight was we may have to begin all over again hereafter, and we may not be blessed like here that we take for granted. May you be blessed in every way - siva

Thanks Steve for your kind, generous, words of encouragement. I share from my life's experiences and to remind that every day is a blessed day, a gift that we should treasure. When our number is called, we should leave with a deep sense of gratitude and a job well done.

What a thought provoking and inspiring post..food and shelter, family, friendship, good health, what more do we really need! ..We look upon ourselves as humans to be the superior beings.. the term dumb animals in this context is way off the mark..as we strive for more in the material sense we gradually lose more and more of wonder of the simple things is life, which are free and bring us more contentment than any materialistic factors ever can or will.
Thank you for another wonderful share Siva

Thank you for your input too Mariah. We have to lay a firm ground for our future whatever and wherever it is.

Our conscience guides us all along. We should even be prepared to start with a disadvantage after this life when we start all over again! Let us nourish our soul by listening to it. When we do that we will glide into the oneness of humanity with all pieces falling into place - siva

Dear Siva, well said. I want the kind of gratefulness to God that creates contentment in my heart. I may not have everything my heart desires, but I have more than most people desire, and I have infinitely more than I deserve. Every day, everything we do, is a gift. Whether it is a good gift or not is the result of our response to grace, to all God sets before us in a day.

We need to chose our words and our thoughts, to use our gifts and to cultivate our blessings as a means of sharing them with others. We have to live in the HERE and NOW, and in doing so make the best of what we have. The simplest things in life give the most happiness, for which we should be thankful to God for his blessings.

Great comments dear Subra and that shows a contented and grateful heart for all the blessings that have been showered on you.

We all have a role to play all the time - it is up to us to choose how we play it. We change all the time according to our physical/mental conditioning but still we can do our best to lend our shoulders to the humongous wheel of creation. Counting the blessings and doing our part with a grateful heart will benefit everyone including us - the least we can do to this creative juggernaut that we happen to be part of. I think that is what we are here for. Our attitude will decide our spiritual altitude. Karma, the law of cause and effect, will ensure the rest - siva

Quite a thought provoking. I was not planning to read it today. Yet, I had recently great expectations from something where I put in a lot of efforts, yet the results do not seem to be forthcoming. I was a bit frustrated and a tad bit sad. However, I feel more positive and looking to enjoy the blessings of the nature on reading what you have written.
I think if all of us behave in a more contented way, and shun a lot of our greediness, the whole world will be a much better place to live.

Thank you Ptrikha for your continuing support, appreciated. I am sorry that your efforts seem to be in vain, but they will never come to naught. Right through life we have occasions when are disappointed by results of our efforts, but I always take a view that my efforts themselves are the reward.

I feel blessed that I have worthwhile things to do everyday and when I look around, those who care least about rewards give more to society and live a contented life. Those who expect more and more are sure to lose sight of simple pleasures of life.

Our Creator sets the example by giving everything for free through nature, including the air we breathe. Is He not present through nature everywhere and setting an example? siva

Our attitude decides the state of the world we live in - the majority is always for peace but close an eye, give a long rope to the few who are against it. For me, change what I can for the better and accept those I can't - has served me well. Wish you all luck Ptrikha - siva

Life can be a song and dance, thanks Kingwell, it depends on our attitude. Our Creator has given everything on a silver plate and the choice of first, rich, cherry pickings!

Being grateful and counting our blessings will lead us towards that path - otherwise, we will realize too late when we ask ourselves - what else did we want, lack? We have to stick to the path of love and compassion;the guidance from within is clear enough - siva

"...our life here could well be the heaven that we overlook." This thought gave me pause.

It comes from those who have it good here on earth. For others, particularly for those who did their suffering in this life, it might go something like this: "...our life here could well be the hell that we avoid.for all eternity."

I understand what you mean, LeRain. In Hindu religion, it is said one should break out of the cycle of births to attain "Moksha" - the transcendent state attained as a result of being released from the cycle of rebirth..

My take was - nature has given everything - okay, almost - for free. I think our Creator should be credited for this and we have to be grateful. And we are placed at the apex of the creation, above all other species - at least in the sense we lord over them.

Agreed, some are born disadvantaged, but I feel few among them are more grateful than those who seem to have everything! siva
