"My very first speed painting..."

One morning last April I had my very first speed painting or live art performance in front of a crowd.

I been painting for years and only tried this new genre of performance when this unique event called for it. Instead of putting up a finished backdrop, i got the idea why not start the program with it? And so the most bold, nerve wracking tour de force gutsy performance was history.

Incidentally this artistic unusual technique is being carried out where the bold artist has a restricted time to complete the work (generally short of what 5 minutes (in this case was a song). The time can change,( i finished it in two songs ) typically the durations can last from a few minutes or just enough not to bored a crowd. However not at all like genre can be easily performed, for example, charcoal drawing, it can only be truly judge as "completed" its is generally accepted among colleagues that once the composition is retouched , it is not categorized as a speed-painting.(though one can argue that you can sit there for more hour one can imagine).

"Speed painting is particularly common among digital media artists,] because digital painting mediums allow for a work to circumvent drying times of traditional media. Digital media artists primarily use speed painting to practice working quickly and efficiently. Speed painting techniques are also frequently used in concept art, particularly in the early stages of a production when the polish of an individual image matters less than a clear basic presentation of many candidate concepts for consideration."

The preparation...

For some visual shortcut, I prepared a black canvas made of paper material. Since it's my first and I have also limited materials provided by schools, I used poster color and acrylic to mixed up to ensured quick dry result. Like the regular painting I made some guidelines or minimal sketch for the figure I will be working on. For my non 20-20 vision and with myopia the black paper canvass made a good camouflage to hide the layout. I will be doing some "choreography" to make a discreet magnification of the actual lines I made. Again the black background will save me some paint strokes and time, It will also make the composition achieve dramatic impact.

Intrinsic Reward

Two night before.I made a mock rendition in smaller version (see opposite page), On the eve of the event I'm done imaginative rehearsal - with just music and paint brushes- without the actual paint You would noticed on the video how I tried to make a poor choreography and even put my mask behind my head to divert audience attention and avoid blocking of my "compelling" work. As the time constraint requires efficient rendering of form and some fine details for an instant result I just hoped to leave little time for noticing mistakes and go on with it..Really, the pressure got the better of me.. I felt the 8 minutes was already an hour passing by. Good thing I was able to pull it off. IN the nick of time its voila, the inverted image finally revealed it's true image and I made a grand "exit" as it wowed the students.

And that's my reward for a live art performance it is when an audience appreciated it.
