India as a mega-diversity nation

Mega-diversity nation is the one which is rich in biodiversity. There are fifteen such mega- diversity nations in the world. India is one of them with a land mass of 329 million hectares and a coastline of 7516 kilo meters with oceans, lakes, rivers, the Himalayas, the desert of Rajasthan, the plateaus, the wetlands and the islands of Andaman, and Nicobar and Lakshadweep. India is home to an amazing variety of fauna and flora.

The higher reaches of the Deccan Peninsula

The monkeys, the lion- tailed macaque tiger, panther, elephant, sloth bear, and wild boar etc.are found in the Deccan Peninsula. Grass Hills in Tamil Nadu are a unique grasslands found only in the higher reaches of the Deccan Peninsula. Evergreen forests are the major biodiversity. These forests include the land woods such as teak, rosewood, ebony iron-wood.

Out of nearly 5200 endemic species of higher plants, the largest number (2532 species) was found to be located in the Himalayas. The region is covered with terai and evergreen oak forests.
