Memories are Made of These

We course through life but soon are in the evening of it. What we need to fall back upon may elude us when young, but memories keep us company especially those of what we did to benefit others. One should keep that thought in the back of our minds even as we pursue our goals to give us proper direction.

Memories worth a Recall

Our life is made up of thoughts, words and actions. Sometimes, we just act without much thought and words; it could well be others may not appreciate our need to act the way we do. We feel we are accountable only to ourselves and our actions can be spontaneous and then we move on. They do come back to haunt us – one mistake is enough to hound us for life and even after we leave this shore. Life is becoming more of reaching point B from point A in double quick time. When others are rushing we follow especially in city life – we cannot be a stumbling block, blocking their way. But human beings are wired with feelings too and then we have to account to our conscience. Before long, our ability to act on our own is reduced with more time to reflect on our life – we are left with memories to chew upon. Do we make sure they are worth to recall and put a smile on our lips?

Nature’s Sumptuous Spread

People are living longer everywhere – life expectancy is going up by leaps and bounds. The old consume more medicines than food to count another day on this lovely planet. The reasons are simple enough; are we not served every ingredient conceivable to put a buffet on our table every moment? Only our lifestyles prevent us from enjoying the sumptuous spread! We also tend to look with blinkered eyes on the feast that our Creator has given us in his utmost magnanimity. The generous heart of our Creator is unfathomable; we partake in the goodies – they are renewed every moment and we too can add to them in every conceivable way. What more, even if we make a mess by our efforts, hey presto, it is cleaned up leaving no trace of our thoughtlessness and ingratitude! Our life goes on while we accumulate memories on recall. The old may lose their minds to even forget recent happenings but memories of good old days keep them company. Just like new-born babies smile often, the old do have reasons to smile.

Lifestyle Matters

Our life is not in our hands. We are forced to act and react to situations. But we do have time to build up our own image and character that should stand in good stead all through our lives. When they are for the good of society, to touch positively as many lives as possible, we accumulate a stash of memories to keep us company in tough times that elude none, and also in old age when others prove elusive! Life takes its course and soon we are forced to clutch at straws. Even the supposed wealthy are not above the vicissitudes of life that we tend to take as not our turn to face! Our health can make all the difference in no time. It matters a lot then that our lives should lead to a reservoir of memories ready on tap to sip from to leave a taste of contentment and fulfillment.

Memories of Contentment and Fulfilment

Most basics are within our control; let is not overlook them. Our actions cast a long shadow not only on us but on others too. Everything is interconnected. Good deeds beget more of them and bad ones cast a pall of gloom on the perpetrator as well as on society; the smog takes time to clear. What happened right from childhood can uplift us but we should also highlight the positives than dwell on the negative side; in fact, the hurts teach us more about life. They help us to distinguish the good from the bad so that we do not repeat the mistakes of others. In personal and work life we are assailed by a deluge of events after events and it is up to us to separate the wheat from the chaff to get proper direction in life. Our world will be a healthier place when future generations are given a heads up towards the right direction to take by highlighting past mistakes that have led to disaster. As they are likely to live longer, it is crucial that they have enough of material to chew upon even as they enjoy more of leisure with robots on call to take over the routine jobs. We are human with feelings that can hurt, uplift or maintain equanimity. Let us not forget the most basic of basics to give contentment in our lives – memories that leads towards fulfillment till our last breath.

As you have so well put it, it is up to us to separate the wheat from the chaff and head in the right direction. The future generations will most definitely need a push in the right direction to keep onto the right path, great write.

Thanks Vellur for your support. Nothing is really wasted including the toughest of times that we shudder even to recall.

It is not easy to make the younger generation grow up as the older are at their beck and call, quite unlike earlier times when they were eager to show they can not only stand on their legs but also help others - siva

Memories give us a sense of continuity. As you rightly pointed out, we should use our memories as a guide to our present acts. There isn't a man as stupid as the one who doesn't learn from his past mistakes.

Great article, Siva. Good job, my friend!

Thank you Kingwell. I see many in Asia who are living decades longer than their parents did and they have mostly only memories to keep them company. Our actions should foster belief in humanity so that they have a feeling their lives have been worth their sacrifices.

May our lives put a smile not only on our lives but also on the previous and future generations - siva

Memories cause dreams in the evening of life. It gives immense pleasure when someone meets us and thanks for the help we rendered at one stage in his life.

Yes GVR, dreams convey many things and also carry messages from those departed.

Dreams have proved a source of inspiration to me too. Hope we pursue those that give us sweet memories in the evening of our lives when we have enough time to sit back and recall such moments - siva

another well balanced article siva.

You always weigh up the good with the bad, you never throw out the bathwater, that might be used for another purpose to water the roses with, you never sweep the dust under the mat. You never hide stuff.

You have a genius for painting things exactly as they are, but always you are placing a positive spin onto the wheel of life at the same time.

Thanks Spirited for your generous words of encouragement.

It is natural for us to recollect our past that is truly past. We change every decade or so and when our actions benefit society, the change should be for the better. I have had a bittersweet life, but we are enriched more by certain setbacks than when it is smooth sailing.

I have no regrets for helping people, but some did take advantage;however, I too have benefited by he largess of few. We help some, others help us - that shows the continuity of life, the baton is changed seamlessly from one generation to another!

When I read between the lines of news and I find life is always worth living - when the push comes to the shove, we rise as one but tranquil times are transient! The majority comes to the rescue when the minority have had their field day playing with fire - siva

Yes dear Siva, good memories are the result of good thoughts, words and actions in the past. Such memories help us to lead better lives in the present and in the future.

When we are in the evening of our lives, we have more time to sit back and chew on how our lives panned out and how we used the time and opportunities.

I have seen some so obsessed with adding digits to their wealth that nothing else matters to them - little are they aware that their own are waiting impatiently for the spoils of their efforts. And I have seen few living in regret that they should not have played out others who were just generous enough to close their eyes and they are the majority!

Thank you dear Subra, my post was just my effort for such like to stop on their tracks, think, ponder and take the right direction so that their lives benefit society too - siva
