Six weeks ago we adopted 2 kittens, and we named them Max and Mia. As each day passes, not only are they growing bigger, also their characters are forming. Read on to find out more.

More about Max and Mia

Six weeks ago, we went to the RSPCA at Canterbury with the intention of adopting a kitten. We actually came away with two, a tabby girl, and her jet black brother. These kittens were special, having been rejected by their mother, this made their bonds with each other even stronger, we could understand it when we were told they had to be homed in pairs.

Their love for each other is very touching. They play together, fight together, and sleep with their arms wrapped around each other. They are like twins, inseparable, although their personalities are so different. They are also very loving and friendly towards everyone, as being hand reared from birth they are not shy, and they love people, and are very sociable.

Mia

Mia was born two days before Max, she is a beautiful tabby cat with a white chest, and also white paws. She is very feminine, independent and feisty. She knows what she wants, and when she is not sleeping on your lap, she will lean up against the side of you. She loves to feel her teeth, giving you a playful nip, but it's done in fun, and never hurts. She likes you to stroke her paws and her tummy, she is a very laid back cat, who takes everything in her stride.

We call her Princess Mia, even so young she has an air of royalty about her as she walks about swishing her tail. She is a very dainty eater, she likes small meals, which is just as well, as her little brother is very greedy, but I will come onto him later.

Mia adores her brother, if he is not in the same room she will go and look for him. They do have a separate little cat bed each, but crowded though it is with legs hanging out at all angles, Mia prefers to sleep in one with her brother.

Max

Max is the complete opposite of Mia. He was born two days afterwards, along with his brother who died, it was not realised that Max was still inside his mother. He was very small, the runt of the litter, but what he in size he made up for in spirit and attitude. I can see now why he survived, he is very determined and strong willed.

There is one word that describes Max, naughty. He gets into everything. He climbs everywhere, we have had to move all the photographs off shelves, and plants, we can't leave any food around in the kitchen, he licks empty yoghurt pots, jugs of gravy, and the other day he jumped in the dogs bowl whilst I was preparing his dinner, and was eating it before I had even got it out of the tin.

He does the most amazing hanging acts upside down off chairs, looking like a bat, or a little black monkey. He shins up the curtains and walks along the pelmets, and even though the weather is very mild at the moment, we can't open any windows, as he would be straight out of them, and I am not sure the world is ready for him yet.

When I feed them, I have tried letting them share the same bowl, but little Max pushes Mia' s head out of the way , ending up having the lions share. So then I gave them a bowl each, but he simply gobbles all of his up, and then helps her to empty her bowl.

With his big eyes, that have changed from green into a tawny brown colour, he stares directly at you, he misses nothing, don't try to eat a chocolate whilst he is not looking, he will leap on the wrapper, and then race off with it.

But when he suddenly collapses on you having worn himself out with his antics, snuggling into your lap, we feel an overwhelming love for him. He is certainly a character, he may be small right now, but he's doing his best to grow by eating for England. Max is incredibly affectionate, and when he is sleeping peacefully in your arms, he looks so vulnerable, he licks your face with his rough little tongue, and arouses every bit of protective instinct we have, we are like the mother he never had.

We call them our babies

In the morning it's like animal farm. Our lovely golden retriever Leo wakes us up. Whilst he is out in the garden I am greeting our babies. They are soft and cuddly when they are sleepy, but it doesn't take them long to realise that life is to be lived, and they rush about having fun. We call them “the bombers” and they certainly live up to that name.

Leo is 8, but he doesn't mind that two lively little kittens have arrived on the scene. He is very gentle with them he lets them play with his tail, and burrow into his fur. We had no doubt that he would be like this. He had lived happily with our cat Charley for 5 years before she died in 2009. But since then it's just been him, but because he has a generous heart, he has accepted our new babies, and they are now very much a part of our family.

I am so glad we made that decision to adopt them. They make us laugh, and enrich our lives with their fun. The extra work, and cost are well worth it, seeing them growing and developing each day is very rewarding, and they certainly help to complete our family.
