This is an interview I sent to our local paper to increase awareness of Women's Soccer. I am the Vice President of Women's Soccer and think it's a wonderful game. Regardless of skill or age, soccer is for everyone!

My Soccer Interview

What age did you start playing soccer? I was 4 years old. My parents were very enthusiastic and with 4 kids, soccer was affordable!

Why did you want to play soccer? Growing up, I was given the chance to play many sports and try different teams, clubs and activities. What I loved about soccer was the game; being competitive, playing as a team. Now that I’m older as well, I love that soccer is still available for me to play.

Have you played soccer in other cities? I played in Edmonton and also one year in the UK. But don’t get the wrong idea; it wasn’t such a high level (shock!), it was a team of misfits and meanies- the hardest team I’ve ever played with. Our captain, Lauren, would tell us off after each match. She would say things like ‘That’s my week ruined cos of you lot! That was an embarrassment. Completely diabolical.’ And that was after a winning game! I had one other Canadian friend on the team. We actually found it funny but maybe that’s because of her delightful accent! (I’m sure she’d be steamed to hear that now!) Oh, I should add… we don’t see that kind of yelling in NOWSA!

What have been the highlights of your soccer career? There’s a list of provincial rep team tournaments from when I was a teenager that make me smile. It’s the same now… Tournaments! I love playing in tournaments, especially the Thanksgiving Classic in Penticton.

What would you say to someone who was interested in getting into soccer? Get out here, already! It’s fun fitness and you’re going to love it!

Good point about soccer being one of the more affordable sports for kids.

Soccer is not a big thing here in America but, it is growing bigger by the day and that is a good thing. Nice read. Thank you for sharing.:)
