Paranormal Festivities, Ghost Walks & the Haunted Surgeon's House Bed & Breakfast

The largest ghost town in America just might also be the most captivating, especially if you are mesmerized by spirits that are workaholics by day and romantics by night. During the late 1800's Jerome, Arizona was the fourth largest city in Arizona with 15,000 residents, and it was once a booming copper mining community. Today Jerome is fondly known as America's most vertical city with an extreme location at 5,200 feet at the top of Cleopatra Hill and is home to a handful of writers, artists and musicians looking for a retreat that offers beauty and tranquility. As far as paradise is concerned, photographers, peace seekers and tourists need to look no further; perhaps this is why so many ghosts have chosen to remain in Jerome as well.

One of the spirits favorite locations in this northern Arizona ghost town appears to be the Surgeon's House Bed & Breakfast that was once a residence to the nurses who were employed by the adjacent hospital during the 1930's. It eventually became the home to Chief Surgeon, Dr. Arthur Carlson and his family. The haunted bed & breakfast with the bright red tile roof was built in 1917 for Jerome's chief surgeon to live in, and along the way it has had a rich history of notable residents from postmasters and mayors to councilmen who have resided in the elegant home. During the 1920's the house was known for holding fabulous parties' created as a diversion for the bosses of the United Verde Copper Company as to alleviate some of the demands that were put on the miners during an average rough and long work day.

Despite the fact that the Surgeon's House is haunted it is one of the most inviting bed & breakfast establishments in the state. It is hard not to notice the fully flourished gardens that burst with blossoms all year long or the many quaint sitting areas where one could curl up and read a book if they felt so inclined. The quintessential aroma that exudes from the honeysuckle permeates the entire outdoor area and is simply mesmerizing and therapeutic to anyone near enough to be embodied by its sweet allure. The Surgeon's House also offers a variety of elegantly decorated rooms from the Masters and the Maid's Suite to the Chauffeur's Quarters, and all are designed with charming and relaxing features to entice the weary travelers into a tranquil state of mind.

It comes as no surprise that ghosts are a part of the atmosphere that encompasses the bed & breakfast when you consider the charming and welcoming atmosphere that the establishment has managed to behold throughout the years. No one seems surprised by the resident male ghost that is dressed to the nines in an expensive suit, carrying a doctor's bag as if he has completed a series of missions. He enters the master bedroom after putting in a long day of work, changes into his pajamas and then vanishes into thin air. Perhaps he retreats somewhere dark so that he can enjoy a deep slumber in one of the many nooks located throughout the bed & breakfast. Another famous ghost known around the Surgeon's House is Alice the maid. She appears to guests in her crisp blue uniform dress and is almost always enthralled into what seems like a lifetime of services and duties that include taking care of the guests all hours of the day and night.

The Master Suite is not only romantic it is also one of the most haunted rooms in the bed & breakfast. Guests often witness a dazzling ghost couple who dance in the glow from the moonlight around the room while looking into each other's eyes, totally smitten by the moment. The enchanting feel of Surgeon's House today is due to the artful eye of the owner Andrea Prince and the creative touches that she has incorporated into every corner of the bed & breakfast. Even her hearty breakfast entrees are ultimately appealing to both the eyes and the taste buds, and her hearty breakfast is served daily on a beautifully set table with fresh flowers.
