Liquids are always fun to shoot, and maybe this could an inspiration for other artists too. This photo challenge is about shooting beverages.

Liquids as art

A refreshing and tempting drink makes you want to drink it, not shoot it, but shooting liquids is always intriguing. On my long list of photo challenges I have “BEVERAGE” as number 4. Any liquid is fun to shoot, and it can make a really cool piece of art.

I decided to go for water since it’s free and doesn’t leave the whole area full of stains. I knew I’d make a mess.

The Setup

With the camera on a tripod it’s possible to get a shot of the splash from a slice of lemon or an ice cube when it’s being thrown into a glass or a pitcher. You can do this on your own, but having an assistant makes it so much easier. With one hand on the release button it’s hard to hit the pitcher at the right moment. Relying on a studio flash that won’t let you use continuous shooting mode because it needs time to recharge between each shot doesn’t make it any easier.

I did some shots by myself and some shots with a little help. I found that using the studio flash modeling light made it possible to do continuous shooting and thereby get more images to choose from. I lit the drink from behind with a studio modeling light and from the side with the modeling light reflected from an umbrella. The important thing is to have fun and experiment with different setups.

Have Fun Creating!

If you’re more into painting or drawing or other arts and crafts, study the light in your own drink and see how it changes when you move it around. Let this be an inspiration to create something cool, and don't forget to have fun when you do it!

Those are great images of liquids. I would need a better camera for sure.

Mark, I'm sure you can get great shots from a cheap camera too! It's not about the gear! :-)

I took these images with a Nikon D700. The shutter was at 250. It's not as hard as it seems. :-)
