Photographs used in articles can come from a set up shot or even just being lucky enough, to be at the right place and at the right time. Sometimes they are not what they seem.

Birdie!

I have been working on a few children's stories with Bugg as the hero and Sweet Tee as his side kick. During this time of the year here in Alabama, we have scores of birds that fly around our yard, as they are going back home, since they flew south for the winter and our winter is over here in the south.

Bugg and Sweet Tee just love chasing these birds around and the birds seem to get a lot of enjoyment, making these two run around the yard.

I have tried to take a photograph of the birds but, as soon as I go to snap the photograph, the birds fly away. Then one day I was sitting outside watching the dogs chase all that moved, when I saw a bird sitting on the ground.

I stood up very slowly, as quiet as I was able to, I walked slowly towards the bird. I knew I just had to get this photograph, it would be perfect to place in a story I was working on.

As I was ready to take the shot, Bugg ran by me and I had noticed, the bird did not move. Nope, this was no bird.

Nope!

It was a frog. Now I am no fan of frogs, I have had one too many of them in my face growing up, as my brother and his friends thought it was funny to see me jump at the sight of one.

Why did I ever allow them to know that I am afraid of frogs, one question I will ask myself all throughout my life, I bet. Here I am, 4 decades later and I am still afraid of frogs.

I decided I needed this photograph even more so than the willies I would be feel every time I picture that frog in my mind so, I walked up slowly and snapped a photograph of the frog.

As a brisk breeze came flowing by me, the frog moved and I jumped back. Then the wind picked up even more and all of a sudden. The frog shot up in the air, I stood there in shock, at the thought of the frog landing on me.

When the frog finally landed on the ground, I grabbed all the courage I could muster and I walked over to where the frog landed.

To my surprise I was wrong again, it was not a frog...

It Was...

A darn leaf that had fallen from one of our trees. I laughed at myself for being so foolish and also having 48 year old eyes. See, when you reach a certain point in your 40's, you are not able to see things close up or far away, as well as you use to, when you were younger.

Now, I could never use these photographs in a factual article on birds or frogs but, I see no reason why these photographs could not be used in a children's story or a poem.

I almost deleted them, so as to make room for actual photographs of birds or even a frog if it just happens to hop by but, I decided to just keep them.

The one photograph of the frog just might come in handy when I write about Bugg and his first encounter with a frog, it is not the same frog that Bugg entertained me with one day, as he chased it around the yard but, it will get my point across to my readers.

Adding Class

When I was shooting the (money shot) last photograph for my Valentine's Day breakfast recipe. I ran into a few problems:

No we are not coffee drinkers and unless you have the right cup, a cup of tea looks sloppy on camera and so I had to make do. I used a cola and poured it in a coffee cup.

I sold my last breakfast tray at a yard sale we had last year and when I serve Dan breakfast in bed, I use a hospital table that was one of my 'keepsakes' from a illness I went through 11 years ago. So I needed a tray.

I tried to put the food on the table with a place mat. It looked just like that was what I did. I needed to get the food higher in the air, so to give the illusion that someone was carrying the tray.

That was when I remembered a big (I mean big) box of candy we had gotten during Christmas. I placed the mat on the box and placed the food around and yes, you guessed it. It looked like I placed this stuff, on a box.

Money Shot!

I knew I had to cover the box and it also needed to be something to go with the place mat I was using. The only thing I had that was a green, was a green house dress my mama sent me some years back.

I messed with it a bit and finally I was able to get it to look like a breakfast tray when I looked through my camera lens.

I positioned the camera so I was just about even with the top of the box and then I slanted the camera down just a tad, so I would not get the hatch that is behind the table I was using, in the shot.

I did not deceive my readers, the recipe I was showcasing, was all there, no props but, if it is a prop that is a back round player, I see no reason why we should not pretty it up, any possible way we can.

Of course this Photograph was enlarged in the actual article, it is the money shot...

Zucchini, Yellow Squash & Potato Hash. With a Lemon Infused Salsa

Brother Dear

This is one of my favorite shots of my brother. Not because he is working hard but because, in this article for the first time, I saw the picture in my head and then came up with the words. Also, just knowing me and my family, the story had me laughing the whole time I was putting it together.

Yes the Alabama scanner was true to form in this article but, me working my brother 'this' hard was the facade. How was it staged, come on, we all must keep a few secrets.

This photo was featured in two of my articles...

Thanks for sharing your production secrets with us. This article reminds of the time I was picking up sticks and picked up a snake, she was my friend and felt bad about throwing her thirty feet up in the air. She forgave me of course but still, that's no way to treat your snake friends. On the farm "black snakes" and their relatives are our best friends as they keep poisonous vipers away. Perhaps this summer I can get some pictures and write an article on them.

Ohh do Robb, that would be a great article. I am no fan of snakes but, I have learned to live with them though, since my kids were country kids and they would bring them home after a walk in the woods. As always, thank you for stopping by.:)

Well done on your star it was well deserved!
I found it amusing with mistaking frog for bird and leaf for frog but the photos you shared show pretty much that and I have 25 year old eyes lol.
I have done similar things myself...
keep writing :) x

LOL Angel Jenny, well if your young eyes see it this way, then maybe mine are not so bad.LOL
When I picture me outside when this happened and the frog flew up in the air and I freaked out, it still makes me laugh out loud. I bet my neighbors got a hoot out of it. well at least I didn't scream like a girl.LOL

Lordy bless your heart. Now, I have sat on the toilet, pants to my ankles and looked down, I saw snake. It turned out to be a lizard but, does it really matter at that time. To this day I still look under the seat before I sit down and this happened when my son was 6 months old, he is now 29.LOL

The breakfast tray looks very yummy. Why not post a picture of yourself with a cup of tea in one hand and a newspaper or magazine in another?
