Unfortunately when you need a locksmith there is not much time to determine the quality of the locksmith before requesting their services.

Avoid the Yellow Pages

One of the first places that individuals go to look for a locksmith is the yellow pages. If you have the time, this may not be the best place to start your search. The reason is there are companies that advertise in the yellow pages that are not located in the vicinity in which they advertise. These companies place upwards of 30 listings in the yellow pages that use different names with different phone numbers that ring into the same central number. The companies will then send unqualified individuals to work on your car door lock.

An individual should research a locksmith as they would any other home professional. They should ask for referrals from individuals that have used, and were satisfied, with the services of a locksmith in the past.

In an Emergency Lockout Situation

Sometimes there is not enough time to research a locksmith before you need their services because you are in an emergency situation, such as locking your keys in your car when you are away from home. The Federal Trade Commision recommends the following:
1. If you have roadside assistance - call them first.
2. Call friends or family members for advice.
3. Get an estimate before the locksmith begins work.
4. If the locksmith says they have to drill out your care door lock you should be cautious - most professional locksmith's can open almost any car door.
5. Get an itemized receipt for all the work that was performed by the locksmith.
